Hi Rad,

Thanks for your reply. I guess I do run the risk of that happening but I feel I need to use both sides for shaping opposite sides of the pipe (as oposed to turing it upside down). I think I wil need the dust cover so I will take your advice and try to make obe out of cardboard.

Thanks,

Tim

Dust Hood for Sanding Station

Hi Guys, I am working to improve my dust collection in my shop. I have my collector shoot and hose mounted under my sanding disk. It works well when I am sanding on the down draft side of the disk but dust is kicked up in the air when I switch to the updraft side of the disk. From time to time I hav...

Stamping Pipes Really Stresses Me Out!!

Hi Everyone, I would like some advice on stamping. I have a realy nice metal stamp from Paul at A&M. I have difficulty with the consistency of stamping. Sometimes I hit it just right, sometimes it may be a little off, too light, too deep. I heat it with a heat gun first and then holding the pipe...

Drilling lucite has been one of the most problematic aspects of the whole process for me. I have found the folowing to help. I drill on a metal working lathe. 1) face off all surfaces before drilling 2) Use a center drill to develop a pilot hole 2) Drill the tenon end first with whatever drill size ...

Hello All, I use delrin exclusively now which I obtain from www.online metals.com I just purchase the size delrin I want to work with (3/8 for the most part) and then get the same size drill to drill the mortise hole. It has been working very well for me. I get a nice tight fit. It really takes the ...

I have used the PIMO countersinking tool with good results. It does a nice job of chamfering the mortise and I have had virtually no light gaps since. I also agress with the rest of the comments about squaring off the end of both the end of the mortise and stem. If you don't have ametal lathe this i...

Getting pipe cleaners through bent pipes

Hi Everybody, I have found on the bent pipes that I make (quarter/half and upwards) that the pipe cleaner does not go in easily. I always create a little ramp at the bottom of the airhole so that a slight twist of the cleaner will allow it to get in. I sold two pipes to friends of mine who expressed...

Stem Detail Tools

Hi Guys,

I was thinking of buying Ken Lamb's stem detail tool kit. They can be seen on his website. I was wondering if anybody has them and what their experience has been like with them.

Hi Guys, Thanks again for the help. I'll try to use a little less of the buttermilk and the fat loaded sour cream. Yes, it is interesting how this recipe came about. Maybe some pipemaker from years ago wanted a bowl coating and sid to himself..hmm maybe sour cream, buttermilk and charcoal would do t...

Yogurt Instead of Sour Cream?

Hey Guys, Is it possible to use yogurt instead of sour cream in the bowl coating? I'vre experimented with both and find the sour cream to be a little "runny" as I have had to go back and recoat the bowl where it didn't grab. I seemed to have less difficulty with the yogurt. Does it make a ...

Thanks Guys, Sorry it took so long to reply but my computer went crazy for a couple of days. The leakage problem I have is just very tiny specks that seeped in from the outside of the briar, not the typical stainage you get near the top of the bowl when staining. It sounds like its not a big deal an...

Stain Leakage inside bowl

Hi Guys, I was wondering if anybody had the experience of stain leaking from the outside of the bowl to the inside chamber. I have two pipes with this problem and it seems that the wood is very porous and allowed this to happen. It is very difficult to remove the stain from the inside. Does this eff...

Polishing the Lip on Stem Button

Hi Guys, I was wondering how do you polish the inside of the button lip (i.e. the slit). After cutting the lip with the dremel type cutter, I get a nice "cats eye") slit. However, I find it very difficult to polish it smooth. I've tried sanding with paper bent over, using a ball cutter to ...
