Re: A&M Steel Stamps News?
Just got an email from Paul saying he's been sick for two weeks but is back in the shop now. Too late for this stamp for me, but good news for those of you waiting for existing orders.

Re: Jet 1236 near Cleveland
Hey Jack, while your attention is here I was wondering if i could get your opinion on something? I'm needing to change the spindle bearings on my lathe (an old, OLD Craftsman) and I found the size I need at Mcmaster-Carr. They're bronze sleeve bearings 7/8"od, 3/4"id and 1 1/4" long....

Re: Jet 1236 near Cleveland
I have one that I use mostly, a Logan 10 that I rebuilt, and then refitted with an 11" headstock and tailstock. Two others in various stages of crapping the bed -- a Hardinge second operation lathe that has a collet closer so is great for repetitive operations and that I do most of my stem work...

Re: A&M Steel Stamps News?
FWIW, I had a stamp made by Rio Grande about 15 years ago and am still using it. They do a good job, if you're in a tight spot and need something quick. Any idea if you can upload an image to them that they can reproduce? I'd really like to have more of a logo/graphic. That was what I did when I go...

Re: My Choice of Jaws!
Looks good. Why not scribe a line in the exact center of each jaw and use that for alignment? Saves the step of offsetting 1/2" for everything.

Re: A&M Steel Stamps News?
I don't know about a stamp for pipes, but Harper makes a really nice leather stamp. Their prices are on the high side but they are also high quality. It might be worth talking to them. http://www.harpermfg.com/index.html Jim I just ordered a stamp from Harper. Of the five shops I emailed, they were...

Re: A&M Steel Stamps News?
All right, then, gents, we need to train someone. I'll happily support Paul if he gets back online, but I need a stamp now. I've emailed Buckeye Engraving in Kent, OH, who seemed like a likely candidate but haven't heard back. There's a company in Pittsburgh that does this sort of thing but they hav...

A&M Steel Stamps News?
Anybody talked to Paul Argendorf recently? I've been trying to contact him for a couple of weeks with no success. I heard that he's had some health issues but understood that he was back in the shop. He's normally very prompt about returning messages, so I'm a bit worried.

Before we start critiquing other's products, I think it is fair to say that most of us are NOT machinists, as is evident fr...

I wouldn't say anything bad about Trent's stuff, but I saw one of his chucks at Premal's and I think the chuck jaws Mark made are better. More rigid geometry and replaceable faces, for starters. The set Mark made on spec has the pins -- I didn't want them so they're not on mine. I don't agree that a...

Re: Simple Lathe Chuck
I think Caskwith is right. I did have my chuck fly off the lathe one time....... whatever direction it was running (reverse). It missed my nuts. Rad It's when the lathe is running in its normal direction and stops suddenly that the chuck can unscrew itself. Most lathes with spindle brakes have caml...

Re: Simple Lathe Chuck
You can also get one these: http://www.oneway.ca/chucks/oneway.htm And use two of these: http://www.oneway.ca/chucks/accessories/tower_jaws.htm (get the #2 jaws) Which more than a few hobbyists and at least one full time pipe maker actually does. It's also fairly easy to make custom jaws for the On...

Re: Popular Science Stem article
I've got a set of Popular Science "Home Handyman" books, there are a couple of articles on pipe making and repair. One of the great things about that time is how it's taken as given that everyone has a lathe. : )

Re: Jewellers lathe?
That's an interesting possibility, but the adapter ought to be hardened so that you can't machine it. Anything that holds the collet has to be hardened or you'll never get the collet out. Perhaps if I ask nicely enough (and throw in a bottle of olive oil  ) I could persuade Kurt to harden ...

Re: Jewellers lathe?
And 5C collets are heaven; you can do lots more work on stems and rings without getting your knuckles whacked by the chuck. Jack, I've never used 5C collets before and know very little about them. How does 5C relate to the lathe spindle Morse Taper (mine is MT4)? Are they closed using a draw bar? T...

Re: Jewellers lathe?
I saw a 2nd hand jewellers lathe the other day that was at a quite reasonable cost. The thought crossed my mind that it might be just the lathe for stem work. Anybody have experience with them? Or is it better to go with just a normal mini lathe? Hard to say without pictures. If the cost is reasona...
