Logan 11 cabinet model
Anybody interested in a Logan 11"? Cabinet model, underdrive. It has new spindle bearings, everything works but is worn. It came out of a gunsmith's shop and has some abrasive wear, but it's plenty accurate, that just means you don't have to feel bad about using abrasives on it making pipes. Ev...

Re: Good price?
Did you take the headstock off to move it? Hope not, they're not mounted on the ways like a Logan or South Bend and it's a bit tricky to get it square again once it's been off. Have fun! Start slowly, turn a few cylinders to get a feel for it. Some of the controls like the threading lever, are meant...

Yes, it's fine. Just don't put a Delrin tenon in it. Delrin on anything else is slick; Delrin on Delrin is grabby.

Re: Good price?
Thanks guys! Any more input? I can't tell you how many times I've jumped on a "good deal" and been burned later. Not really. I've looked at the pictures closely, and I can't tell if the ways have a ridge from abrasive wear or it's just the light. Doesn't look like they've been overly gene...

Sandpaper plus handball or racquetball. You, know, the blue rubber ones, smaller than a tennis ball?

Re: Lathe Use Advice
Pics of your tools and setup? Scottie22 just went through something like this. Some tools, even properly sharpened, take more touch to use than others. I find round tools like gouges hard to use because if they catch they can roll on the rest and change the edge exposure and BAM!!!! I like scrapers....

That's one of the old Taiwanese machines. Very good quality, much better than the current Chinese product. I can't tell much about wear from the pictures. Will look more closely, but I like this vintage of Jet. I have a 13-inch like it and it's a very good machine.

I turn ebonite at high rpm for better finish. If you're having problems your tool probably needs to be sharpened.

Re: Slack Belt Sander SFPM?
I like the idea of a foot-powered sander, but I think a treadle would be better for keeping things steady. I have a collector friend who has a number of foot-powered lathes, and I reckon a sewing machine treadle could be adapted. Me, I ran a quarter-horse 3-phase motor off a frequency drive and cont...

Re: what do you think
Too many questions. When were they made? What was the briar? What are the shapes/sizes? Can you inspect them? Can you send them back? Let's say they're decent sizes and shapes, and the briar is such that, with sandblasting or rustication you can get a presentable pipe out of the majority of them. No...

Re: Gonna get my BLAST on !
I left mine on the pallet, too. It was already bolted down, so what the hell. And I wired my stuff myself, too. It's really pretty easy. The truth about most electricians and contractors is that they don't WANT small jobs, so they quote high. Exercise some commons sense and read a little and you'll ...

That shoulder is created by the nose radius on your cutting tool.

Re: Seating Steel tubing.
Did you mic the tubing? Sounds a couple of thousandths over on the OD, chuck a bit of it up and clean it up with sandpaper. If it's still too tight, repeat until it fits.

You can get a block in the same position again if you have a dial indicator with a magnetic base. Put the block back in the same marks left by the jaws and tighten just enough to hold firmly. Indicate on an already turned surface, and gently tap, tap, tap with something like a brad hammer until you ...

Scrapers are for wimps. Real men use a gouge! :fencing: :fencing: :fencing: :fencing: Todd From the use of the word "husband" I get the idea that Scottie22 is a lady, and so free to use the most effective tool for the job without fear of failing your gender test. If she *isn't* a la...

Is it my eyes, or do you have a taper attachment compound -- slotted extension? Do you have the rest of it? Kinda rare on a 200.

Re: What am I doing wrong?????
Also, I have not used an Easy Wood Tool, but I would be very afraid to use a scrapper for rough turning. My opinion is that a scrapper would be much more prone to a catch than a gouge. Except that it ain't. It's like a lathe tool. The amount of "bite" you can take is governed by the back ...
