I don't know why you guys are being so critical about my pipes. I have to say it hurts a little... it hurts.

Ahh, I was thinking of a brass ring insert in the face of the shank, not a brass tenon band.

When I add brass rings I usually just match the diameter of the brass in question to a drill bit, the drill the hole for the brass followed by the standard bit size for the Delrin insert. It isn't terribly difficult to do it freehand on a lathe or using rubber jaws on a drill press vice. Good Luck.

The smell is why I've moved to alternate materials. My workshop smelled like a perm had caught fire in it.

I really like bulldogs too, I think they're an excellent exercise in pipe making and they are easily tweaked to show the style of the pie maker making them. The only critique I have for the pipe is that I personally like a thinner bit and maybe because of the length I might have flared out the bit t...

I had no idea Utilikilts were so popular with the pipe making sorts. Some sort of strange synchronicity. We should start a guild.

Odd looks so far, no comments. I think if I started doing the dance of the sugarplum fairies on the front lawn though I'd start attracting a bit more attention.

After sweating and cursing last year in the workshop I decided to be proactive this year. I shaved my head and wear a Utilikilt in the shop for extra airflow. We don't have seasons like fall and winter, we just have "paradise" and "rain". From November till April we'll get four h...

I use both precision ground forestner or a pilot point bit depending on the circumstance. The Pilot points make it really easy to center the draught hole in the center of the mortise: http://www.homedepot.ca/wcsstore/HomeDepotCanada/images/catalog/36f565e8-b361-4814-a026-4415dd0a5b67_3.jpg The Pilot...

You can do shank adornments on a Taig, it just takes a bit more of a round about route. I inlay woods on my stems and shanks pretty much the same way. First I chuck the first layer of wood or stem material, and face it on the lathe. From there I glue the next layer on without removing the first from...

I have to admit that I've been working on the premise that ignorance is bliss. I have a goal that I try to hit every month as far as income is concerned, but I've known for quite some time that I need to keep better records and be a lot more aware of where my time and money is going. I'd be interest...

I've never had a problem with a Delrin tenon into a Delrin sleeve. I've been making my pipes that way for a few years now. http://www.downiepipes.com/faq.html Hope that helps a bit.

This is from a post of mine on another board in this forum: "I just sent Trent Rudat an email about regrinding the bit I got from him two years ago in Chicago. I was never very happy with it - it seems to have a pretty pronounced shoulder, if that makes any sense. The tobacco chamber goes down...
