Re: A few more of my recent pipes

definitely out there! I dig the creativity in the first one. I like the idea. The stem on the first one seems to have a little bit of a curve as it tapers down to the bite zone; try wrapping your sand paper around a flat object so your hands/fingers don't dig into the stem material unevenly. On the ...

Re: Im pretty new to pipe making and im open to some feedbac

Very interesting pipe. I agree with Scottie regarding the transition. The stem appears to be a little on the thick side and could start to taper sooner, but it's hard to tell from the pictures. By the way, how is the Morta attatched to the briar? If it's epoxy I, personally, would worry a little abo...

Re: On Making Classics for Your First Pipes

I like allowing people to learn their own way. If you tell me to do something a certain way because you know better, I want to do the exact opposite to try and prove you wrong. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I'm not going to learn any other way.

billiards can suck upon it. What if he makes a kick ass blowfish his first try? I don't disagree with the advice, please don't mistake what I'm saying. Maybe people want to learn the hard way - I do it all the time. I have only made one blowfish. I used a few different round dremel cutting/f...

Re: How to deal with this.

I've seen similar things on some apple blocks I boiled. What happened was MOLD. It will stain the wood. I saw some small blue/black mold spots starting to develop (I didn't seal it well enough with wax) so I decided to sand off those areas and reseal it. I had to sand pretty deep; the mold spots see...

Re: Cavalier Blowfish

Thanks guys! Those are very helpful observations. I like those suggestions. A paneled stem would've been cool. That would look very sharp. You could also extend the "edge treatment" up a couple corners of the shank. I have another cavalier that I will be starting; I might try it on the nex...

Cavalier Blowfish

It's been awhile since I finished a pipe; shop is all in boxes, new house, and new baby. I obviously admire some of Grant Batson's designs. I'm open to feedback if there are any suggestions as to how I could've improved this design. The bite zone on the stem looks thick in the picture, but that's th...

Re: Music and Pipemaking

Interesting topic to me! I always have either a podcast (usually joe rogan) or music playing. I've always been curious what others do to occupy their aural senses while working. The music I play influences the design on the pipe. For example if I want the pipe to feel "dark" I may listen t...

Re: Metal lathe vs wood lathe

I make all my stems on a wood lathe. I think down the road I would love to have a small metal lathe for stems only but right now it works just fine. I have to be careful and very precise but I've done just fine. It is definitely more dependent on the users hands but I kind of like that connection to...

Re: #3

looks like a smooth seam where there is the inlay. What kind of wood is that? I'm not a pro, but I think there's some room for improvement, if you're looking for advice... thin out the stem and give it a more gradual taper throughout the entire shank and stem. The stem appears to plateau around the ...

Re: Good article on cutting-edge pipe design

My favorite pipe makers are those that appreciate the value in restraint. I value creativity and innovation but tobacco and the materials used have a lot to say by themselves. I think the more elaborate designs are cool, but my own preference lies closer to modesty than some designs. It's great that...
