IMHO, a fill of dust and epoxy will look horrid. How deep does the flaw go?.......thats the $64.000.00 question. I would certainly try removing the flaw before moving on to another piece of briar.

My latest.
Hello all. This is my latest. I was looking at the Castellos on Greg pease's website and decided to try something along the line of a shape 55 pot. Comments, critique welcome. I believe this will go with me to the NASPC show to be included in the fund raising raffle for the club. http://mikes-pipe-s...

Three pipes from my little workshop
Hello everyone. I've finally had time to take some horrible photos of the last three pipes I've completed. Two were made with rather narrow blocks and are therefore paneled. http://mikes-pipe-site.tripod.com/my_pipes/thumbnails/400x300/three_pipes.JPG Nothing fancy. The pipe with the side panels ala...

Option number one above is by far the easiest for me anyway. It doesn't take much of a champher and if done well, it looks very nice to boot.

a new 'chubby" biliard for me
Hello all; Actually got out in the workshop (detached garage) and made a new pipe for myself. Its a saddle bit billiard. I used Grecian briar. The grain is of a pretty good Dunhill Bruyre quality. 56 grams in weight. I hit the drilling center and have high hopes for it's smoking qualities! http://mi...

I was never able to find any waterglass here locally so I abandoned the idea. Have to admit the fact its used for water profing concrete bothered me a little but mostly it was the inability to get the stuff that did it. It may be the way to go when trying to coat the bowl of an antler pipe though. I...

What I've been able to desypher from tidbits of various posts on the matter is this. Get some buttermilk, sourcream and charcol powder. I found some capsules at a pharmacy that were filled with fine powdered charcol as an antacid I guess. Mix up a 50/50 mix of the buttermilk and sour cream. Add char...

RE: stain technique
My wife watches all those home improvement shows on HGTV and DIY network. She told me some guy says if you put your wood in the sun for a day or two before staining it that the grain will be more visible. I haven't tried it yet.

some pipes I have made lately
Hello all. I have put several new pipes I have been making on my wes page. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to post pics here. I would welcome and comments or advise. The stem shank joint is still problematic for me. Mike Stanley http://mikes-pipe-site.tripod.com/on_the_bench/index.album?i=6

I would try soaking the offending stem in bleach. It'll disintegrate the pipe cleaner in a day.

Just be certain to coat any logo with vaseline or it'll eat that away too. Same goes for any metal fitments
