Re: wood chisels
You can get a Craftsman Utility sharpener at Sears for around $60, maybe even cheaper if you hit a sale. It takes about 1 minute to get a clean, straight sharp edge from a dull one. For honing the tools, the ez-lap diamond hones do the trick. You can do it all with the hones, but the utility sharpe...

Re: wood chisels
+1 on replaceable tip tools. There's different profiles available. I've got this one and I love it. I can turn most straight pipes using just this. I prefer a shorter handle so this is what I went with. The bigger one is probably better, but I'm a smaller dude, so I go with what works for me. http:...

So, basically. kind of same of with the lathe.Literaryworkshop wrote:On the drill press, slower is usually better, especially when drilling the chamber, but also when drilling the draft hole.
Thanks, Steve, it really helps.

Re: Speed to Drill the Tobacco Chamber and Airhole on a Lath
@Wojtek: thank you for your precisions. @Premal: I would be using a 8 X 12 metal mini lathe with 1/2 HP and 4 Amps. I am aware from members of the forum that it's really not the greatest to be using a mini, that's it's more suitable for stems; but I cannot upgrade yet to a decent one in size & ...

Re: wood chisels
Top half? If you are using a woodturning lathe the proper tools are woodturning tools. Which tool specifically depends on the job and your preference for technique. There are a few other things you can get away with, but you need to know what you are doing. Oakbear, thank you. By "Top Half&quo...

Speed to Drill the Tobacco Chamber and Airhole on a Lathe?
Good morning gents, I am not quite sure what speed I should set the lathe at for drilling? Also, if I decide to use a drill press instead, what would be the speed? And, as we're on that subject, if I want to turn the top half on a lathe, what would be the speed? As you can see, I'm right at the bott...

Re: Lathe Chucks
3 Jaw chuck is an essential bit of kit for a lathe, that's why I have ummmm ooh err about half a dozen of them. A 4 jaw is also essential which is why I have 2, self centre and independent. You will also need drill chucks, about a dozen of them as well. Did I mention I have a problem! Hmmmm.....

I bought my lathe today, but it is a 3 jaw chuck that comes with it.
Will it be an issue to hold the stummel?

Re: Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
Yes, I guess investing $1000 now in a mini lathe + some accessories and having to buy a new one twice the price in 2 or 3 months because it can't cut it - litterally! - would be detrimental to my finances....and morale.
thanks Jos.

Re: Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
I have a Sherline and also a Taig, I think they might work with a set of riser blocks, but I wouldn't recommend either of them. Size wise they are too small, and trying to make a big lathe out of a little lathe will still lead to some disappointments. And you will still have a micro lathe when you ...

Re: Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
It is a problem for briar because of the lack of turning space, I suppose? Right. If you want to turn stummels, do yourself a favor and look for a 9" x 20" ... or bigger. More is more, as far as lathes are concerned. Oh, and what you should be looking for is usually not called "mini&...

Re: Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
The 3 main things here, I think, are:
Weight of the lathe: 25 lbs heavy enough?
Distance between dead ctrs: 8" and
Motor: being Voltage vs HP, is 90 Volt strong enough for briar and stems? Or might I just burn out the poor thing within a couple months?

Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
Hi guys, I am shopping for a lathe and heard of Sherline lathes. But I am unsure if it would be suitable for pipemaking? They are 3 1/2" X 8", 24" overall length and a shipping weight of 25 lbs. Here are the specs. I have read a good amount of threads on the subject but specs wise, I ...
