Re: help finishing birch
Hi Kurt, Thank you for the response. I don't have a picture of the actual stock but here is a picture of the same stock I found on the internet after it was sanded with 400 grit. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q257/gulfportfire/firearms/058.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q257/gulfportfir...

help finishing birch
Hi guys, I'm taking a break from pipe making to take on a project for a friend. He wants his birch laminate rifle stock refinished. I have never worked with birch but I know that it doesn't take stain very well and usually ends up with a blotchy finish. Should I attempt to finish this like I would a...

Claudio Cavicchi Rustication Finishing
I have a couple of Cavicchi pipes and they are both rusticated. The finish on them is very shiny and they look great. Does anyone know if he uses shellac or lacquer on these pipes? Here is a picture of one of his rusticated pipes I found on the internet: http://www.thebriary.com/images/1C%20126%20fu...

Lovat Shape
I've decided that my next pipe is going to be a Lovat. However, I'm a little unsure about the shaping of this pipe. Should the shank have a slight taper like a traditional Billiard? I've seen some Cavicchi Lovat shapes and the shanks don't appear to taper at all (at least in the pictures). Any help ...

Sandblast Finish?
I was wondering how most of you finish your pipes after sandblasting? Do you use carnuba wax, shellac, or just a dry buff?

Water Glass Bowl Coating?
Hi Guys, I've tried the sour cream, buttermilk and charcoal coating but I CAN taste it and it drives me nuts. I remember seeing someone post recipe containing water glass, charcoal and pumice but I can't seem to find it. What are the ratios and where do you get the pumice? If anyone knows, please le...

Faux Ivory?
I've seen some pipes with faux ivory rings at the end of the shank and it looks like white acrylic to me. Does anyone know what this material is and where I can purchase it? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the responses. I’ve smoked Squadron Leader, Abington, Westminster, Etc… I only smoke Virginia flakes, English and Balkan blends. I’ve smoked 10 bowls so far and it is getting a little better but it literally makes my mouth feel like I just drank an imperial IPA. The next pipe will be c...

My pipe has a strange taste?
Hi guys, I’ve finally completed a pipe I decided to keep it for myself. I made it out of an Algerian Ebauchon block and it draws fabulous. However, when I smoke the pipe it leaves my mouth incredibly dry and woody tasting. I don’t know if this is because I didn’t pre carbonize the bowl or what but I...

Lathe Speed???
Hi guys,
I recently purchased a Jet Mini lathe and I'm still getting used to it. I was just wondering what speed or RPM you use when shaping the bowl and shank. Thank you.

Dust Collection
Hi guys, I was just wondering what most of you use for dust collection. I currently have a 12 gallon Ridgid wet/dry vac and I’m not sure if this is going to be sufficient. My shop is about 20x30 and I’m wondering if I’d be better served by a dedicated bagged dust collector? Do you think the (5HP) Ri...

Argentine Osage Orange?
Does anyone know if a pipe made from this wood is safe to smoke? I know that people have made pipes from American Osage Orange but is the Argentine version any different? I picked some up at the local Rockler that had been sitting for 3+ years. Here is a link: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page...
