This pipe sucks. Everything about it just blows chunks. Too bad the grain on the briar is so ugly...

Re: two more The Eggman and Mauna Loa another volcano
Really digging the Egg, love the way you made the saddle work with the lines of the pipe. Not so sure how I feel about the volcano though, I'm not into asymmetry but I do like the plat bottom.

Re: GP02 2nd pipe, 1st rustication
I was actually planning at first to do it that way Rev. I'll admit that I chickened out because I was afraid of trying to rusticate down through the transition and along the shank. I settled on the idea of a rustication that stayed on the bowl only, since it was my first attempt at rustication and a...

GP02 2nd pipe, 1st rustication
So I made this pipe for me and in the end I'm really ok with it, especially considering all the trials along the way. I have a very basic workshop setup (hand tools, cordless drill, and two different dremels) and so I purchased a pre-drilled kit and stem from Mark Tinsky. The block ended up with ton...

I feel ya on the need for a drill press Drew.
I am working on my 2nd pipe as well and here's hoping it turns out as well as this one did, nice work.

Re: New Pipes
Not a lot of qualified opinion here but I can tell you what I see and would have done differently... Chubby Pot - Probably my favorite of the 3. Sand the bowl, you've got stain bleeding down. Freehand - Stain is a little dark around the front/top of your bowl, a little more time with 400 sandpaper b...

Loose Tenon
So with my poor man's workshop and really only hand tools to work with (nothing beyond a cordless drill) I find myself with a loose fitting tenon I bought a replacement tenon from Pimo because I was also buying a couple other things from them, otherwise I would have just got another one from Tinsky,...

You're telling me that that kit comes with an arbor attachment that will fit a hand drill?

Re: Why PIMO buffs but not Beall?
Yeah they look like they shed a LOT at the beginning. If I can get my hands on a motor I will definitely make the investment. I could put them to great use doing gun stocks too.
Sas, I don't see what you are talking about on pme. Maybe I just don't understand what I am looking at.

Re: Why PIMO buffs but not Beall?
I was in a similar situation. I ended up with some buffs from Pimo and few other cheap ones I picked up in town. The Beall system is clearly superior by contrast, you really are getting what you pay for, unfortunately for guys like us you'd also have to pay for another piece of machinery as well... ...

Re: Fun "wizard" pipe project
Cool, I obviously wasn't speaking from a perspective of experience or vast knowledge. I really wasn't worried about it being a good material in terms of health, safety or durability. My line of thinking was more along the lines of that steel tube heating up because it is directly inserted into or at...

Re: Fun "wizard" pipe project
I'm no expert but I have a feeling that the stainless is going to cause you problems at some point. I dig the shape of the bowl and applaud your efforts here but those smarter than I could probably tell you why you don't see anyone using stainless for pipe construction. But hey if it smokes nice and...

Wow, that thing looks serious. What is this decent price you speak of? I've been looking at lathes myself but it's more of a pipe dream right now (pun intended).

You should put posts like this in the gallery section. Also it would be fun to see your other work thus far to be able to compare this pipe to others you've made.
I hesitate to make any criticism since I myself am a fledgling pipe maker but hopefully you are enjoying the craft!

It is good looking briar but I have to ask: Who is this Vermont Freehand? I mean other than a member of this forum... I've searched ebay and the store doesn't seem to exist anymore. I want a web store!
