we just had some unexpected expenses come up. Doesn't look like the budget is going to allow much in the way of playing for a while. I'm sorry to say I'm going to have to drop out this year. Although it doesn't amount to much, the money is better spent elsewhere right now.

Nice pipe! I know I would consider those results to be a success.

Much better than anything I've made. Take the critique for what it is. A compliment. Really bad pipes don't get a good detailed critique like that.

Good thing about the spider. It's too big to swallow in your sleep. There's also enough drumsticks to go around.
The house looks good. The lumber is obviously not Home Depot. It's too straight.

Re: Form or Function Survey
Thanks for the participation so far, guys. I'd be happy to share the results once we have some more responses. Just so you know I'm too new to pipe making for over half of those questions to have any value from my answers. That didn't stop me from answering them though. I'm glad you did. One of the...

Just so you know I'm too new to pipe making for over half of those questions to have any value from my answers. That didn't stop me from answering them though. As far as the sales questions go, "0" would be the correct response from me. I've only made a small handful of pipes, all with fla...

Re: My first hand cut stem (Almost)
I have yet to successfully cut a stem though I have ruined some stock trying. I'm wondering if there's anything cheaper to practice on.

Re: Very Beginner Questions
Billy I'm basically a beginner too. Massis and Ernie have already answered your questions better than I can. This might help fill in a couple other blanks. I started a few years ago then stopped for the last couple years and am now starting over. I prefer to square up my blocks first. It makes it ea...

Good luck with your surgery. Take it easy afterward and don't strain yourself. Give yourself the time it takes to heal. Good thing about it, pipes are small. Not much heavy lifting involved.

I have a wood lathe. I use files and the 80 grit gouge a lot. I'm not proud. Whatever works to remove what you don't want is fine with me.

Re: Leaving the hobby, selling everything
The price might have been a bit high but I've seen far worse than that brought back from the dead. Most of the woodworking tools in my shop started out as bad or worse when I bought them.

Re: thanks a lot...
I haven't worked with burl fruitwood for pipes. Straight trunk pieces can have the tars in the tobacco leach through the walls. Aim for thicker walls than on a comparable briar pipe. Painting the ends helps slow down drying and helps prevent cracking. Figure on a year of drying per inch of thickness...

Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
Calsbeek I'm not sure of the exact definition other than it's a tapered joint kind of like a Morse Taper but for pipes. There's no shoulder at the joint like there is for typical pipe mortise and tenon joints. You don't want the tapered tenon bottoming out in the mortise either. As far as reinforcem...

Welcome David.
I don't have anything to add to the critique but I will say it's a very good first pipe.
Your second attempt at shaping the button is a huge improvement.
You're on the right track. Keep going.
