I use dremel tool with the flex shaft. I do find my self using the tool less as I perfect my pipe making skills but it does still get used. You can pick it up in home depot if you are looking to get started right away.

Your choice on the bend. If it were mine, I would bend it ever so slightly, just to get the end of the stem parallel with the top of the bowl. But, that is your choice. I drilled hole in the cocobolo and then chucked the briar iin my lathe to make a tenon. a little epoxy and clamp and it was good to go. I then used a forstner bit to counter sink the end of the shank a bit so the stem sits inside the cocobolo. I hope you understand my ramblings :think:

I have mine bolted down to my workbench which is attached to the wall. Its pretty sturdy but would like to make stronger bench dedicated to the lathe because I still seem to get some vibration when running it. I have a Delta Midi Lathe and I do the same as random. I also agree that there is too much wobble on the tailstock when it is not secured.

well I drilled and turned my first pipe on it and it held up great. I still want to put a couple bolts in for safety but it held the briar like a champ!
