Re: Sandblasting help
The nozzle that came with my cyclone cabinet didn't work great either, even when I switched out the 15cfm orifice for the 5cfm one. I ordered a ceramic nozzle with a smaller hole and it made a huge difference. I still can't blast super fast but I generally take 30-60 minutes with a 10 gallon, 5.4cfm...

Mixed lot of Acrylic stem/pen blanks
I went through my acrylic blanks, bought for pen making but very useable for pipe stems, and separated these (see photo below) out that I'm not going to use for pens or pipe stems. I figured I'd offer them for sale here for anyone who may use them for whatever purpose. There are 55 blanks ranging fr...

Its been several weeks since i posted this and so I thought I'd repost in the hope for clarity. cheers: ---------------- I'm beginning to think that I don't know what a military mount is. does it have a tenon at all? Or is it just a tapered rod that fits into a shank that has metal reinforcement? a...

Re: 2nd crack at squashed tomato. this time with cocobolo
. . . I guess I just lack an aesthetic eye for this sort of thing. Keep looking at good pipes from high end makers/manufacturers and this will develop over time. Go to pipe shows and handle some of these pipes so you can look at them from all angles. Look at the lines of the profile and top and bot...

Puffy lid on mason jar
When I visited Germany earlier this year I purchased some motzek curly strang. When I got back home in mid late July I put about 3 ounces of the rope into a mason jar to cellar. I was going through my cellar last night and noticed that the lid on the jar was puffed up and wouldn't go down when pushe...

Re: Golden Ratio a Farce?
Once, as a personal test of the golden ratio, I drew three similar designs for Christmas ornaments, one using the golden ratio and the others not, one squatter and one longer. I asked a number of people which they preferred as a survey. Everyone chose the one with the golden ratio. It's to me that w...

Re: pipe makers in northern VA or Washington D.C. area
I'm just north of Baltimore so on the limit of the hours radius (if there's no traffic). I'm pushing the definition of pipemaker too since I don't seem to be able to make too many right now.
Re: PITH 2015
I haven't sent my review yet either (but you knew that). I've had a serious cold this week so couldn't get to smoke it enough to give a full review. Hopefully will get some time this weekend to make up for lost time.

Thanks for the info everyone. It is very helpful. I think I'll give it a go with the 220 grit and see what happens.
Re: PITH 2015
Thanks for the kind words and critique. Most of those I was aware of when I finished but I appreciate your honest opinion. I hope you enjoy the pipe for many years.

Re: Recommend an aluminum oxide grit
Thanks Scottie & Jeremiah. To clarify a bit, I understand that the alox will not be as detailed as the glass bead but I am thinking it may get the blast a little deeper to begin with then I can follow up with just glass bead for the detail. I am using the cyclone e100 cabinet with the 5cfm air n...

Recommend an aluminum oxide grit
I have been using fine glass bead in my sandblaster with mixed results, partly because of differences in the wood and partly, I think, because I am using a smaller compressor and small (5cfm) nozzle. My intention is to find a harder abrasive to blast harder blocks better and possibly speed up blasti...

Re: First Lovat, Need Help Before Finishing (Updated)
Looking good. I would suggest a few things to refine the shape: - round the bottom of the bowl more, the curves you have are more abrupt for a typical lovat - narrow the top of the bowl a bit, not too much, to have a slight taper from the top to just above the top of the shank - take a little more o...

Re: Facing small extension pieces without a large.
You can also try temporarily gluing the small piece to a larger piece of wood or other material that is easier to hold while facing/drilling then remove from that piece before attaching it to the stummel. I would suggest using CA glue on metal (aluminum or brass would work) as the CA will usually re...
