Re: What is the purpose of PMF?
I haven't posted 'round here in ages, but I'll throw my thoughts out there. - There's forum named Following the Iron Brush that serves as a specialist area on the internet for artist’s who’s primary interests are small scale sculpture. The “Iron Brush” alludes to the chisel and represents their comm...

I use wine bottle corks. File/sand then to whatever shape you need. Good for finishing bits.

Re: Slack Belt Sander SFPM?
FWIW, which is probably very little, I've never heard of a big slack sander for pipe making using 1" belts. Everyone uses 2". No experience here, so I'm just mentioning that in case you didn't know. I think the reason for that is that the edges are not your friend. 1" has a lot of ed...

Re: Slack Belt Sander SFPM?
Cool. I can get it down to 900 FPM with the motor and sanding belt drive wheel I have in hand. I may even try for 700 if I can come up with the right combination of pulleys between the two.

Gee, I never thought of that.
Does anyone know what sort of SFPM is 'comfortable' to work with?

I particularly like the side views of upside down bent pipes. Just because it sets steady that way doesn't mean it's worth photographing that way. Who the hell ever holds a pipe upside down to study it's profile?

Slack Belt Sander SFPM?
I'm building a slack belt sander for 1"x90" belts. The typical small " belt sanders you see at every tool store run about 3000 SFPM, which is faster than I want to run over my fingers, but I'm not sure what would work best. Any of you guys who are using such machines know what sort of...

Mine arrived on the 24th. Thanks for taking this on Wayne. Let us know if you're left with any unpaid expenses - it's not fair that you get left holding the bag and we'll pony up a few bucks if needed.

Re: Pipemaker Tooling
Any word yet on when this is going down? Because it sounds amazing Spoke with Todd briefly at the show, he said some of it is still at the tool & die shop. Should be coming soon though I believe. I bet he'll give us an update on it soon. I spent 18 years working in tool & die shops. Expect ...

For an "ivory" (off white) color, I've been using plastic light switch covers. They're pretty consistently .070" [1.8mm] thick, cheap and available at any hardware store.

Re: Lessons i have learned so far
My old machine shop teacher always said most drill bits get over-sped and under-fed. He meant that people run them at too many rpm and feed them to slowly. After working in shops for >30 years, I must agree. For drilling briar with a spade type bit, you should run it as slow as your machine will go ...

If the motor has a label or plaque on it, let us know the numbers. As Sas says, it may be a standard frame size & configuration that's easy to replace. Or not.

John - I made a new guide pin for mine that is sized for a 5/32" draft hole instead 1/8" draft hole. The part that fits in the tool itself is 1/4" diameter so I just took some 1/4" stock and turned the business end down to .153". I'll make you one if you want. You can see th...
Re: Pipe Bags
I think some definitions may be in order Mike. A 'pipe bag' typically means a satchel sort of affair with room for a few pipes and accessories. A 'pipe sock' is a sleeve to protect an individual pipe.
