Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Hey M.Jones I am new to posting on here and fairly new to pipe making. I started with a HF mini metal lathe and that let me do somethings that I couldn't do on my wood lathe but it mainly let me know that I needed to sell and upgrade. I just took some training and used a PM 1127 and it was great. I...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate all of the information as well as your opinions. I see that lathe as priced really well for what you get. I've thought about it and it's all context. I spent $2400 on my bicycle (Bianchi Sempre), $500 for custom hand built wheels, $300 for a Garmin Edge 500 GPS ...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Thanks, Tyler! I appreciate the feedback. I have run into the same problem in this area, lathes on CL are like gold. You have also given me plenty to think about, I've read your post twice now just to make sure I haven't missed anything. I'm leaning towards the PM1236 but am a little worried about m...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Seems my searching needs some improvement. Honestly, I wouldn't know what to buy in a used lathe, I will keep doing my research. I appreciate the comments so far!

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Well let's be honest, if you can afford it, go for the best tool you can buy (that's always a good rule). A good lathe will last you literally a lifetime and you will never have to worry about that again. I get the jealousy  Thanks, I hope people are not jealous or feeling like I am some guy ...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Actually I wasn't looking in any specific price range. It just seems to be that way in this area. Check this one out: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/for/4192052167.html I am doing research (Youtube videos/reading), and I think buying new will likely be the more expensive option but better for me ...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Agreed, my only issue (as someone already pointed out) is that I don't have the knowledge or experience to know how to buy a used lathe. I would definitely prefer not to spend so much money, believe me. I'm not rich, I just have a decent job. I will definitely feel the ~$4 to $5k.

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
I hope in the long run that it becomes more than just a hobby, but I have no illusions that I will ever make enough to pay this thing completely off. Though, I am hopeful and optimistic.
I have a decent corporate job that will fund my insanity in the meantime.

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Well, there's the rub. I can buy something else and have to buy again later, or I can buy something that is "overkill" now. Which way ends up spending more $ in the long run?

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Todd J., Tyler, and Scott Thile swear by this lathe as the best bang for the buck currently available. Here's Scott's rundown on getting his and setting it up: http://www.sethilepipes.com/k2-news/8-news/149-the-new-lathe Thank you for the great info and the link, I can budget for this. I understand...

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
A lot of people say to go bigger, bigger, and bigger. I want to understand some of the reasons that may not be obvious to someone new such as myself. If you guys have the time and don't mind commenting, what are some of your reasons for larger lathes?

Re: In the market - Metal Lathe
Thanks for all of the great replies! I did do a little searching on craigslist and found this for $2900 OBO. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/wan/4233338231.html I'll definitely watch the videos and read all that was recommended. I want to buy once, I don't want to end up having to buy bigger down ...

In the market - Metal Lathe
Hey, Guys, I have been making pipes with a Rikon wood lathe for a bit, but I want to start learning how to make them with a metal lathe. I know this has been asked before, but the searching through old posts is taking forever. I would like a metal lathe that can do everything except sanding ...
