Re: my third pipe complete
Charl: now dammit, you left that hanging :| what refinements would you suggest? Refinements would be stuff like keeping your lines crisp and straight. You can see some bulging on the shank, and the stem is kind of "duck billed" It could be the lighting, but the bowl seems over buffed near...

Re: PITH 2017!!!!!!!
I'm going to have to withdraw from this year's PITH. To make a long story short, I have moved back to the USA from China, and haven't had the time or space to make pipes. Good luck everyone, and I look forward to seeing your completed pipes! Kiel Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Where at in the U...

I have cracked a few shanks before too. It sucks, but we can also call it part of the learning process. I have yet to make a mistake free pipe. There is always something that could or could have been done better. So learn from your mistakes, take your time, and welcone to the (cracked shank) club.

Re: Bamboo questions
I have dug up bamboo from the mountain where I live in China. Wasn't sure how to dry it or any thing, and honestly I forget what I did to it. It is dry and usable, but it is really wrinkly.

Re: Help save my pipe, critiques needed.
There still things that can be learn with this pipe. Sand it smoothly up to 400, stain it, and buff it. After all that smoke it yourself and let it serve as a warning to all the other blocks of briar that are in a hurry to become a pipe.

Re: #9
It looks like there was a problem shaping the the bottom half of the bowl. That is the part that can't be turned on a lathe. My guess is this wasn't the intended shape. In the future, try slowing things down a bit. Also, check out some pictures online of the long shanked billiard family to get an id...

Re: Baby Poker
Thanks George for your critique. I'll have to check out my order of operations. The only time it was chucked up on a lathe was when I threw a pin gage in it to face it and to shape the shank. The stem was shaped seperately on the lathe. The little flair was supposed to be a fishtail. Thanks Jeremiah...

Re: Dream Buffer Setup
My buffing set up is just chucking up different wheels on the lathe. I got some wheels and polishing compounds. It is definately not anyone's dream set up, but it works. My shop lacks space. In the future I hope to one day have more space for equipment. Space for equipment that I don't really need p...

Re: Second solo Sandblast Dublinish Sitter
The stummel shape is really nice and the blast helps capitalize the design. The left profile shot of the stem's saddle is in harmony with the stummel's lines IMHO, but the corkscrew shape of the saddle distracts from the overall shape on the right side. It is a nice symmetrical shape until the saddl...

Re: Is this pipe worth $470?
I am not trying to make excuses for the cutting of corners, but I want to comment on the price. Last year while talking with an Eastern European pipemaker, he said because of sanctions the cost of getting briar into the country is super high. He would first buy from Italy and have it sent to Estonia...
