I'm sorry, I was referring to blasted Morta. I've used carnauba wax and it looks very nice and clean but I want a more permanent finish.

Morta Finish

Hello, I've made a lot of Morta pipes using carnauba wax as a finish. The pipes looks nice and clean with just wax but I'm looking for something that will last shining longer. I've tried shellac, danish oil and I jut don't like the look. Any ideas?

Wow! I posted this almost two years ago and never replied to any of the opinions. How rude of me. Thank you.

Horn from Hina Handicraft? (India)

Has anyone ordered horn from India? There's a company named Hina Handicraft. The person keeps sending me messages via Facebook about their products, some times I get the feeling is a scammer but I'm not sure. Any experiences with this company?

Re: Bowl coating pealing everytime

Mohammed, Years ago, I used egg white and powdered charcoal, mixed until it was a thick paste. I then added corn syrup (close to honey in consistency) until it was thin enough to apply. I searched this forum, and there is a lot of concern about food borne illness and mold affecting these types of o...

Would you tell me other way for coating?

Re: Bowl coating pealing everytime

Either your mixture is not formulated correctly or there is something still sticking on the walls that is causing the bowl coat not to attach. Try sanding with p150 grit or less. I am mixing 50/50, is this correct? I am also sanding with 150 before the applying with q-tip. Thank you for replying. 5...

Bowl coating pealing everytime

Hello friends, I've been trying to coat the bowls in my pipes with the sodium silicate/charcoal mixture and the coating doesn't stick to the walls. I've even tried sanding the walls before coating without success. Any thoughts?

Re: Finishing bog oak

I thought about that before but the only local pipe maker thinks he's a "god" (I praise him for his fine work but doesn't like helping others). I don't know any other pipe makers willing to help with that, for a fee of course. Do you know of anyone willing to blast it for me? I have done ...

Re: Finishing bog oak

For what it's worth, it looks like you have a bit of tearout on the bowl. I presume you turned it on a lathe. Morta is notorious for being prone to tearout. Keep tools extra sharp (you may need to hone them more than once per block) and do some sanding on the lathe to get it smooth. I haven't done ...

Re: Finishing bog oak

Smooth is the only other option really. You might be able to rusticate with a wire brush but I am not hopeful. What about 'blastication' with the texturing wire wheels from that other thread? Turned out nice. :D As for "blastication", I tried it with morta and it did have some effect, but...

Thanks for the sujestion. It will most likely end up as a smooth pipe unless I get good results on a scrap piece.

Re: Finishing bog oak

You can always experiment with rustication or other finishes, but smooth or blasted (I saw Walt's suede blast on a scrap, but none of us have been able to figure out the secret yet...) are the two standard options. If you're finishing smooth, wax is a good option. If you're blasting, you'll need an...

Finishing bog oak

I'm working on my first bog oak or morta pipe. I don't have a sand blaster and I don't really like the smooth finish on morta. Is there any other finishing technique that works on morta? Do you wax morta pipes or just sand it until it shines?

My latest pipe Would you call this a poker?

I love making pokers but now that I work with a lathe I'm trying to make new shapes. Is there a more specific name for this pipe shape?
