Re: No.10 Pipe for Critique

I mean, I post pipes for critique and barely get a comment most of the time, but the minute I say I'm selling a pipe, the thread becomes grand central station, much like this one. Like if I can't even get an honest comment like "Hey bro, that pipe is shit, start over . . . " until I've de...

Re: No.10 Pipe for Critique

Seriously though, I noticed the same thing, Walt. I was wondering the other day why all the "big dogs" haven't been so active these days, and this might be the reason. I wouldn't waste time and mental effort to give carefully thought out advice if people were going to get all huffy about i...

Re: Sanding/buffing of stem: microscratching

I think it's harder to source Sia here in the US. I looked into it when I decided to go with Klingspor because I could find it easier. Same here. Here's a couple: https://thesandingglove.com/SIASOFT-Abrasive-Rolls.asp http://vinceswoodnwonders.com/sia-foam-backed-abrasives/ Cap'n Eddie Castelin plu...

This Dublin 55 looks fine to me

Seriously though, I agree with Jeremiah. Nice finish and stemwork, funky bent/straight conflict.

What a worthless little micro lathe. Surprised he can turn anything on that tiny thing.

Re: Tomato "L'Atalante"

So you are only posting your pipes for praise and are not open to critiques? If that kink and droop in your shank is a "design feature", it is a poor one. It really does detract from what would be an otherwise stunning pipe. Maxmil did not ask for critique, so can we assume he doesn't wan...

Re: brass on shank

Hardtofindium, procurium, or strongmantium are the only metals you should be using.

Edit: unobtanium is also nice, if you can get it.

I say screw Boyle's law. Just remember pV=NRT and derive Boyle's law if you need it. :takethat:

Re: Pipe No3

Looks like your research and development is paying off! Finish is fantastic; I don't see any scratch marks. Stain looks a bit uneven in places but that may just be the lighting. The bit is well polished, even behind the button (which is notoriously tough to polish). I'd like to see more meat come of...

Re: question about air hole below mortice

IF you can hold the stummel securely and IF you can get everything lined up, it could work. I'd be worried about drilling crooked or off-center but I guess that's your best bet if you don't have a lathe. Make sure your drill and Forstner bits are sharp because you don't want to have to apply much pr...

Re: question about air hole below mortice

Ok I think I'm going to try to combine the best of all of these ideas. I took a slice off the shank which brought the air hole closer to the mortise. Now I plan to reface the shank and then re-drill the mortice with a larger bit (3/8" per Sas). This plan is: a. excellent b. a shit show waiting...

Re: Bulldog no. 1

Hmmm...drilled like a horn, shaped like a bulldog. What to call this shape? Seriously though, I really like it. Plenty of forward motion and sharp lines flowing graciously into that stacked bowl. Kind of a Danish modern feel, and compositional very well balanced. Finish complements the shape nicely....
