This dude does a triple contrast stain on a bowl (like a dish, not a pipe bowl).

Re: Anyone ever use a bristle blaster?
Does this mean I get a shout-out on Pipedia when these things go totally mainstream? Seriously though, I am very excited to have other people excited about this. The more people we have experimenting and developing this idea, the more finishing possibilities are available to us poor souls ...

Re: Anyone ever use a bristle blaster?
It's not a "normal" wire wheel; it's a big course nasty thing with stiff bristles. I put it in a Jacobs chuck on my lathe, ran it at 2500 RPM, and pretended it was a buffing wheel. Hold the pipe on it so the bristles travel in the direction of the grain and move the pipe side to side, perp...

Re: Anyone ever use a bristle blaster?
Okay, okay... I'll confess I didn't want to shell out 250+ dollars for the bristle blaster (CPO outlets carries the right-angle version for auto body work, BTW, and Nortonsandblasting carries replacement belts). BUT, wanting to investigate the concept before divesting myself of the funds, I used one...

About 20 to 30 minutes. I think there might be some potential here.

Re: Anyone ever use a bristle blaster?
So the literature I've read says it leaves a sandblasted finish on wood, which is why I'm curious. My first thoughts are the same: probably tear your briar to shreds, maybe give you a wire wheel effect. But the way the thing is set up, the bristles don't drag across the work. The individual wires pi...
Re: number 12
The thing with the stem is that it appears to bulge in the middle of the bend. Could be the angle of picture or that the taper isn't consistent from the saddle to the button. Was going to say the same thing. I think it would look better if it was slightly thicker near the saddle and tapered subtly ...

Anyone ever use a bristle blaster?
Obviously, the best way to get a sandblasted finish is to use a sandblaster. There are those among us (myself included) who, for whatever reason, are unable to do so. My question is: has anyone ever used a bristle blaster? http://www.mbxit.com/products/mbx-bristle-blaster-c-6.html Apparently they ar...

Re: My first shot at pipemaking
I know it probably sounds boring, but you should probably start by making a few billiards. That will teach you a lot. The standard finishing method involves sanding through all the grits up to 600, then using a 3-step buffing process. This is how a "glass-like" finish is usually achieved. ...

Re: Shellacing Problems
The thing about the stem is that you will probably want to sand it to a higher grit than you do the stummel. You could try Micro Mesh if you want to go crazy with it.

I think it's made by some guy named Davis, and I think the pipe itself is rad.

Re: burning the stem while drilling
Personally I've never seen an extra long "bell hanger's" bit that had flutes beyond a couple of inches. That's NOT to say that they don't exist somewhere. I have a 5/32 that is 12 inches long but only has an inch and 3/4 of flute and a 12 inch long 1/16 bit with less than an inch of flute...

Looks like you took too much off the top of the shank near the bowl. I'd argue that you could make the pipe look a bit better if you took more of the top of the shank near the bowl: Before: http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/kjkktk123/pipe%201/1.jpg After: http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...
