Re: Tapered bits locking up in acrylic...
George - it was a long shot, I gave it a try, thanks for what you did provide. Premal - Thank you for your assistance, I appreciate it. I am curious, is it recommended to use the tapered bit all the way through the rod, and just out the button end? Or do we still want a short length of 1/16th for fu...

...necessity, ingenuity, and the creative spirit. I started making pipes (like, I'm sure, most everyone else here) from kits - for kicks. I couldn't (and still can't) afford to splurge on expensive pieces. I thought I would try my hand at crafting my own. I really hadn't considered making "for ...

Re: Another inciteful question for Sparkle Markle's amusemen
Is this a discussion about mental attitudes/personality types that shoe horn a sense of fuckery into an established area of practice, simply for the sake of acquiring fame and fortune, with or without a conscious mind to what this activity is doing to the whole? Because in the artworld arena... Andy...

Re: Tapered bits locking up in acrylic...
Premal, yesterday I drilled some acrylic tortoise shell rod. I entered both ends with a 1/16th bit first. Began the tenon end with a long 1/8th, then the 5/32nd straight, finishing with the 5/32nd tapered, all with lube. I can't say that the swarf was powdery, but it stayed in the flutes until I rem...

Re: Tapered bits locking up in acrylic...
Thank you - Premal and George. We (Jake, one of my theatre students) discussed using the 5/32 straight bit before finishing with the tapered. We decided to skip... that and no lube were probably the two largest contributing factors to the locking/freezing/fucking problem. We made his stem yesterday,...

Tapered bits locking up in acrylic...
I finally replaced my tapered bit with two 5/32 bits from VT (I lost one this summer, broke it in an acrylic stem). Yesterday we broke another one in a different piece of acrylic. Has anyone else had problems with acrylic locking up on tapered bits? Thanks for feedback. Sent from my iPhone using Tap...

Re: This should help settle the art vs. craft debate
That was hilarious George. Wayne, Taste defines good or bad art. Immanuel Kant believed in the objectivity of taste as a principle or potential, and he postulated his belief on what he called a sensus communis , a sense or faculty that all human beings exercised similarly in esthetic experience. [Gr...

Re: Art or Craft?
This thread has a lot of meat to it. A considerable amount of chewing must be done in order to discern what exactly we are trying to accomplish, if anything. The original idea here, if I'm not mistaken, was whether or not pipe making is an art or a craft. However, we have jaunted around many ideas a...

Re: Art or Craft?
The purpose of making "Art" is enlightenment. The purpose of making "Craft" is entertainment. Intention is key. If the intention is to paint, sculpt, construct something "pretty" to compliment the environment (ie, the living/dining/family room), then the creation was cr...

Re: Teflon tenon
I have used teflon pipe thread tape as a temporary fix in the past (come to think of it, there are a few pipes in one of my racks that still have tape on tenons). The problem is... each time you remove the stem from the pipe, you will most likely need to re-tape, and this contributes to the inconsis...

Try adding a little (very little) green to your red... Little by little, testing on scrap as you go. It will deepen your red.

Re: Billiard
Nice work. I'm not sure what to think of the abrupt taper on the stem. I think a graceful transition here would be appropriate.

Some other things I do...
I currently am so busy with academic work that I haven't had time to make any pipes :| This semester I am teaching three classes; photo 1, photo 2, and colored pencil (at two different colleges) and overseeing scenery builds (at a third college). I want to be more active in pipe making, but there is...
