Re: Ebonite flaws?
The heat from buffing may be bringing up dents in the vulcanite from earlier work on it. This happens with scratches when heated after buffing. The flaws in the picture look like little bubbles or inclusions. Rod Vulcanite from all three sources can have this issue. It is just something that we hav...

Re: Ebonite flaws?
Just to double check, are you finding a small void, or a little chunk of something that you have to sand out? andrew Sometimes they can be voids, but most of the time it is a tiny bubble of ebonite.. if I run my finger across it I can feel it slightly. Sometimes I can buff them out with green tripo...

Re: Ebonite flaws?
Cleaning them with sandpaper seems suspect to me. I wouldn't put anything with grit near my wheels. Is it possible that these are wounds inflicted at an earlier stage, by a file or something, and that don't become apparent until you are polishing? I have considered that it could be something that i...

I really don't think my wheels are too loaded, but I could be wrong. How often are you guys cleaning/raking your wheels?

Re: Ebonite flaws?
1. Clean wheels with rake/sandpaper/buffingcompound on occasion 2. Looks like you are using Nikko ebonite. You will have to re-sand with 1000 grit after first buff then buff again to get rid of bubbles and texture 3. heat the stem with gun or flame after first buff. Let cool, clean with alcohol or ...

Before I replaced everything I was using the wheels and compounds that came with the bealle system.. now I'm using wheels and compounds from Tim west (red trip and white diamond)The Smoking Yeti wrote:What buffing compounds are you using? And where are you sourcing the compound from?

Re: Ebonite flaws?
OK. When you say, "Tried different ebonite", what change did you make? A different piece of the same rod, a different rod from the same maker, or new rod from a different maker? I've tried different pieces from the same rod, different size rods, different color rods, and also a different ...

Re: Ebonite flaws?
Are you raking/cleaning your buffs? If so, how? I first tried to clean them using sandpaper on a 2x4 as was suggested by some here...When that didn't fix the problem, I replaced the the buffs all together..same issue still occurring. It's also worth noting that this only happens with ebonite. Acryl...

Ebonite flaws?
I have been having an issue with "flaws" showing up in my ebonite stems. It's been happening for several months and I've tried everything I can think of to isolate the problem with no success. These "flaws" look like tiny little bubbles with a crease. They don't show up until I'm...

Delrin sleeves
A quick question about using delrin sleeves. Would a 5 minute epoxy be acceptable... or am I best off using a 24 hour? I know the 24 hour would be best, but the 5 minute sure would be more convenient if it's an option Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ball nose end mill for tobacco chamber
Has anyone ever used a ball nose end mill bit for drilling the tobacco chamber? I found one through enco that seems like it would work well but I hate to spend the money on it if I'm wrong. Here is a link to the one I was looking at: http://www.use-enco.com/1/1/46790-caa60035b-hertel-m-42-cobalt-4-f...

Re: Integral Tenon question
Thanks for the replies everyone.. so what I am taking away from this is that sharp tools are definitely the trick. Since my original post, I made another tenon with a freshly sharpened hss and it turned out much better!

Integral Tenon question
Upon returning from this year's Chicago Pipe Show I decided to learn how to turn integral tenons. Up until now I have been using delrin. I tried turning a tenon on a scrap piece of Ebonite and for the most part it came out pretty nice with a good fit. However I am not happy with the finish on the st...

Bent Rhodesians on a lathe
Hey guys, i have a question regarding turning bent Rhodesians on the lathe. When I make a bent Rhodesian I purposefully design it do that the shank won't get in the way of me being able to turn the top of the bowl and cut the Rings. I've seen a lot of pipes where the shank extends well above the Rin...

Re: Buffing Wheel replacement/maintenance
I've used both 100 grit sandpaper on a block of wood and a buffing rake and have had no problems with either, yet. Does anyone recommend not using a buffing rake? Will the rake reduce the life of the buff as it does of course tear into the buff a bit. P.S. I went and looked at your your pipes. I'm ...

Re: Buffing Wheel replacement/maintenance
Try using some 36 or 60 grit resin-backed abrasive (or grinding belt) to clean the buffs. I've been using the same set of buffs with regular cleanings for nearly ten years. --K Thanks for the tip Kurt.. you just take the disc and run it across the spinning wheel for a few passes and it's good to go?

Buffing Wheel replacement/maintenance
Hello everyone, I have a couple of questions regarding buffing wheels. (I have the buffs that come in the Bealle Buffing Kit) Lately I've been noticing that I'm getting mixed results with my white diamond buffing wheel. Sometimes I have no problems at all.. but then every once in a while I have noti...
