@LexKY_Pipe: I was using brown tripoli, but I'm thinking not enough of it (as you suggest). I'm also thinking that a sewn buff would be a better choice than unsewn. @alexanderfrese: Yes, I eventually went the wet-sanding route for that stem and it worked fine. I even tried out the Micro-Mesh, since ...

A question about the buffing details here... I've read the ASP buffing FAQ, but I'm not sure that I'm doing it right. Or maybe I'm just losing some important info in however many pages that thing is. I was trying to remove some oxidation on a stem recently, and couldn't quite do it with the wheel. I...

Impressive work. Particularly given that it was all hand work, your symmetry and clean execution of details is great. The rustication and finishing work is also very attractive. I don't particularly like the lines of the first one, however. Now, I'm something of a classicist when it comes to shape a...

Re: Taking The Plunge
Having just grappled with equipment questions, I'll jump in here. Being new at this, I may be missing some things... I have a lathe question......which will be a ways off for me. Do you guys that have lathes use metal lathes or woodworking lathes? What sizes do you have? Depends on the person, their...

Nice pipes, and nice, simple overall site design. It's painless to get from the front page to the pipes for sale, which is the important thing. I also appreciate the multiple extra pictures available for each piece. What's not so good, however, is that the actual product pages don't render properly ...

Re: First pipe!
The question is, how does it smoke? It smokes dry and stays lit well, which is good. But the flavor is clearly a little funky from the pipe mud. From what I've read, that should smoke off soon enough. Did you make this from a kit, or block'n'rod? Block and molded stem. I'm really interested in hand...

First pipe!
Finally done with my first pipe! I had a blast making this and look forward to many more. http://www.sophrosune.org/photos/pipes/pic01.jpg http://www.sophrosune.org/photos/pipes/pic03.jpg http://www.sophrosune.org/photos/pipes/pic04.jpg It's got plenty of serious issues, both stylistic (some assymme...

If you want to do everything with one lathe I would get the jet metal lathe that Todd was talking about on another post. It is around 900-1100 dollars. If you're referring the BD920N that Todd Johnson recommended to me, it may be useful to know that the price has recently gone up. The Amazon price ...

Your best bet is probably a Jet BD920N. With the stand and everything, you'll come in at just under $1K. Wow, where did you get that price? What I've seen online for the Jet is $1100 for the lathe only (including shipping). I was planning to build my own bench anyway, so if I could get the Jet for ...

Metal lathe recommendations?
Hi everybody - I've been lurking for a while, but I think it's time to get started now. Lovely forums Tyler's set up here. Anyway, my question... I'm ready to jump into pipe making, and need to get myself a decent lathe. I'm particularly interested in stem work, so I'd like to go ahead and get a &qu...
