Try this tobacco chamber coating...

Charcoal, powder sugar and water. Mix to a paste and apply to tobacco chamber to finish inside of bowl. Also helps to create a quicker burned tobacco coating.

It won't spoil like some of the other coatings that used sour cream and buttermilk.

Re: Broken hearted

1. Try a different supplier and don't buy a kit pipe.
2. You can try maple, apple, cherry, or any good dry seasoned fruit wood (from a fruit tree).
3. Pipemakers emporium on the web carries briar and so does Pimo pipe craft.

Ref: Pipe making wood dust etc...

I have been making pipes for about two years and wear a good dust mask ($2.30 each) and work on a bench outdoors for the shaping and sanding. I still get dust and it bothers me at times. Any suggestions as to what I can use to eliminate more of the dust? Never tried to use a paint respriator, etc. o...

Re: Still Trying to Expand My Knowledge Base

When you say copy of someones pipe, how do we know that the person didn't copy it from someone else who copied it from someone else? It is ok to copy. One really can't make the same pipe twice anyway. Wood grain, color, etc. is will likely be different. Most all great makers of art at some time lear...

Re: Very basic questions about forming a stummel from a block

First use a band saw or coping saw to cut around the block to form a rough stummel (That is after you drilled your tob. chamber and air hole/mortise). Then use a 6 or 7 inch disc sander attached to a lathe or a laid down drill press to trim more wood close to the shape of the finished pipe outline. ...

finishing bamboo extension...

I have some bamboo and would like to finish it as follows: 1. bend it so as to make
a 1/4 + bend for churchwarden pipe. 2. finishing the surface.
3. I have to epoxy the tenon in the one end and mortise on the other end.

What are the best ways to accomplish the above? thanks!

Rusticating bowl and shank...

I use a steel tap placed in a drill press or a lathe and this works very well rusticating a pipe. It doesn't grab as long as, you hold pipe firmly. It also speeds up the process as it can cover a good size area quickly. The finish looks like blasting. You need to practise on a piece of wood or old p...

Adding initials to the side of a stem...

Any suggestions on adding initials on the side of a black stem. The initials wanted would be white... I am guessing that if one places some type of white material over the stem and then imprints the initials with steel lettering that the material will be imbedded in the lettering. But what material ...
