Re: 5th pipe for review ANSE

Thank you for the feedback. I have modified the stem a bit and yes I was going to fishtail it but got a bit carried away with the sander while shaping....so long fishtail. As for the chin of the bowl below the shank it will just be off I suppose. The pipe is for a friend and I'm afraid to get the bo...

Re: 5th pipe for review ANSE

Thanks for the feedback. Yes the bowl does dip below the shank. Good eye, I was afraid of getting the bottom of the bowl too thin. Right now it is about 1/16" and that is about how far I would have had to bring it back up to be inline. So how thin is too thin? I assume at some point you would b...

5th pipe for review ANSE

So this is my 5th pipe. It's been a while since I had time for another project but here it is in hope for some good pointers so I can continue to improve my new hobby. For this one I picked the smallest block I had and it was the same width as the bowl is finished so there wasn't room for an egg sha...

Re: Pipe making teacher wanted!!

I have to agree there is a lot of great info and help here at your disposal. Just give it a shot, post pics of your work, and you will learn a lot from the feedback. You could also take some classes at the university to learn lathe work ;) Then as you progress and get to know some of the members of ...

Re: 4th of July Pipe!

I saw the links were broken but you could open the images in a new tab and it worked just fine. So I fixed it to simplify everything now. I'm actually at work and had to take care of a few things before I could get back to fix it. Hope this helps....lol.

Happy Independence day!

Re: Wet sanding?

wet sanding is normally used only with 400+ grit sandpaper sanding with the grain to get a smoother gloss finish on wood. However in this hobby we use buffing wheels which do this much quicker and easier so I don't see there being much point. It does raise the grain some and you could use this to li...

Looks great. I really like the cherry color and the stem works well with the pipes uniformity. Very cool!

Re: My 2nd PIPE

UPDATE: I dyed it a bit darker and changed the stem a bit as well as finally getting it to seat better by beveling the mortise a bit. I think it is ready now. Thanks for the input and feedback it is greatly appreciated! http://www.pipeandwine.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/profile-e1402639602562.jpg...

Re: My 2nd PIPE

Next time, try to link the pictures right into the thread, instead of an external link. You've got a lot more material you can remove from the top of the shank near the bowl and under the bowl. The symmetry on the top of the bowl is off. You have a large gap between stem and shank. Next time, fit y...

Re: My 2nd PIPE

I was thinking about refinishing it to something more black to bring a bit more contrast with the stem? I'm giving this to my dad for his fathers day present so I guess I need to figure it out soon...

My 2nd PIPE

So here it is, my second pipe I've made from block to finished pipe! Praises are greatly appreciated but I would also like to hear what I need to work on for my next project other than a better source of briar than eBay
