Compressor, blast cabinet, dust deputy.. $1200
I’m selling my beautiful Quincy air compressor, Blast cabinet, Deputy dust collector W/hoses, blast gun at a loss - $1200. I’ve listed them on the Raleigh Craig’s list & have weathered several scam attempts (some really clever), so the ad says local buyers only. It’s so set up for pipe blasting ...

Re: 920 spindle speeds & "machining a backplate for concentricity."
Right. So even though I’m cutting steel (semi-steel cast iron I guess), the low speed I’m cutting at means I’m better off with a HHS bit. Thanks.

920 spindle speeds & "machining a backplate for concentricity."
So I suddenly needed a three-jaw chuck, which I have, but without a back plate. Got one off Amazon of the right size, but one that “must be machined for concentricity” to fit into the back of my chuck. I have only ever turned briar or cherry. According to the machinist's table on this, the cutting s...

Don’t Try This at Home.
This J. T. Cooke video remains a classic. I’ve often heard it referenced but had never seen it. Massis — many thanks for remembering my search for it some years back and uploading it. Now it’s on YouTube for all of us.

Great and very helpful responses! Thanks to all of you. I need to develop safe procedures so I can make them habitual and focus on the pipe!

Using a drive center or live center to turn stummels?
I’m using one of Trent’s pipemaking chucks and they can pivot while being turned. Any one use a drive center or live center top when turning a stummel? An MT2 extension could get a drive center to the stummel. I’ve been exchanging emails with a machinist whose freaked out by the extending jaws of th...

Re: Experienced pipe makers willing to teach?
Thanks to all who responded. Such straightforward words are more than I'd hoped for [not that any other kind of words ever find a place on the forum]. I forgot to add my willingness to thank anyone willing for their time in dollars, which I am. I thought of it just after I got on the road for a meet...

Experienced pipe makers willing to teach?
Anyone open to visits by a medium-skill pipe maker seeking technique improvements in his weak areas? I live in NE GA, but am willing, within my limited means, to go to where help is available. I’m aging fast (see photo), and need to make up for time wasted by not making pipes.

Bending a stem for an oom paul.
I’m working on my first oom paul. I expected a learning curve on the stummel, but I got a good result there. I never expected to get stalled by trying to bend the stem. I’ve made slight bends for quarter-bent pipes with no problem, but nothing this bent. I’m using a molded vulcanite saddle stem. I h...

Re: Five questions about mortises and tenons
No problem, Kettletrigger. I did not measure the #U bit .3680 in. I measured the mortise with a simple caliper marked in 32nds of an inch, but magnified. I can estimate maybe to about 1/8 of 1/32, .0039, but usually only about 1/4 of 1/32, .0078. I like to have a somewhat accurate target dimension ...

Concern for weight on headstock spindle
I've just moved from a JET 1014 to a JET 9X20. I have Tim West's aluminum arbor and shaping disk, plus a pretty stout adapter his father-in-law Jim made for me (which was by itself, quite an investment). The 2" long steel adapter went onto the 1014's 1x8 spindle, which takes the Jacob's chuck, ...

Used set of Smokindawg Chuck Jaws - $50
Bought in 2014 and used several times. Excellent shape. $50 plus shipping. I'll box them up and check on that expense before we do the deal. While these are certainly just as great as everyone says, I've am re-mortgaging my house and moving on to a more versatile type of jaws.

Anybody have one? Anybody still making them? They're easily made from a standard Taig tool post - that is, by anyone who has a mill or some such.

Quincy QT 5HP 60 Gal compressor skid dimensions
This info was so hard to get I just had to document it. The dimensions of the packing crate for the Quincy 5 HP 60 gallon compressor are: 42" x 42" x 82" My shop/garage has an incline to it so I'm pouring concrete the size of the skid for a level place to install the compressor. My pl...
