Re: Jaws For Holding Briar in Your Chuck!

I agree with Jeremiah, i really like mine. The pins would be nice sometimes, I've thought about adding them to mine, but I would probably buy another set if you added them.

Re: New Orleans Pipe Show Report

My wife went with me, and we had a fantastic time in NOLA!! I agree with Bruce--the venue was fantastic, and Toby and crew did a great job organizing the show. The traffic was a bit under what I'd hoped for, but very respectable for a first show. Sales above $300 seemed pretty slow (I was skunked o...

Re: PITH 2015

Here's where I am as of now. Still have to blast, stain, finish, and bend stem. I should get there. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p22/redlinecustoms/Mobile%20Uploads/20150807_170658.jpg I'm not sure that a bend in the stem is entirely necessary here. If anything, it should be only very slight....

I can see that, but you're still finishing with oil or thinned shellac of some sort right?

Re: Finishing Blasted Morta...Oil???

Well it's alcohol based stain and my thinned shellac is mostly alcohol so it seems most of the color is not on the surface. I'm not selling this one, but rather testing it well to make sure I'm happy with it. Maybe I should go over it again with my regular thinned shellac, no stain. Thoughts? This i...

Re: Finishing Blasted Morta...Oil???

I went with the thinned shellac/black stain then hit with a clean wheel when it was dry. It worked good. Thanks again for the advice.

Re: DIY Custom Lathe Chuck adapter?

3 jaw chucks don't hold perfectly concentric and over the years get a bell mount from the scroll closing method. This decreases the already small gripping area. You are spinning a large, heavy, unbalance load and carrying out interrupted cuts and heavy drilling operations. For me the chances of it ...

What would be the need for a drawbar? I'm not dealing with a taper of any kind.

Re: DIY Custom Lathe Chuck adapter?

Another option would be to buy a lathe spindle adapter for going from another spindle size to what your wood chuck is. They're cheap and it'll give you more area to grab if you're concerned with that. That's what I did here. I cut the part with the flats off so my small 3 jaw chuck would grab it wel...

Re: Finishing Blasted Morta...Oil???

I've got some excess I cut off of the block. I may cut it into 2 or 3 pieces, blast and try a couple of different things to see what works out best.

I'm definitely still open to other experiences and opinions.

Finishing Blasted Morta...Oil???

I've searched here and elsewhere and came up with nothing. I'm working with my first block of morta. It is more of a grey color not rich black. I was told when I oil it that it will darken up. Oil it? In my reading on morta I've never heard any mention of this. Anybody mind helping me out here? I wo...
