Selling Materials and Tools
Been a while since I've been on here but getting ready to get rid of most of my stuff. Among other things, retirement is approaching and I'm getting ready to put my house on the market and move to FL. This is a serious downsize for me so will make everything from briar and ebonite to a SB Model 9A l...

And, they've got to be way cleaner than I'm even capable of.I'm glad I'm a pipemaker, a repair guy needs way too many buffs.

Re: Importance of Shellac ??
For me, the light sanding between coats and even of the final coat followed by buffing evens out any imperfections and provides the deep shine.

Until you pointed out it was supposed to be the dot, I thought it was bird shit.

Re: Wood lathe drill bit wobble
If your head and tail stocks are lined up and the jacobs chuck in in line with all that, I'd think it should work OK. I'd check for something simple like a bent drill bit.

Re: My First Pipe, a Freehand for Dad
As I'm sure you'll hear, it's tough to critique a freehand as there are no standards. Your finish looks decent but need to go back and work on the bit. Still looks squared and can't imagine that would be very comfortable for the smoker.

Re: Sanding steps before buffing
but found it difficult and tedious to sand off the base layer of stain with 1500 grit sandpaper I've found that wiping/rubbing down the base stain layer with a DNA saturated cloth makes the sanding part go a lot easier - if needed at all. If nothing else, you get that top layer off that clogs the s...

Re: Inserting a spacer in a stem
I gave the CA a try and then fitted a tenon. Unfortunately, the pipe got away from me on the shaping wheel and the delrin tenon broke between the main stem and the first ring with that glued joint breaking apart. Seems with pipe making, I need to screw up everything new at least once before I arrive...

Re: Inserting a spacer in a stem
Thanks Andrew. I just don't have the experience with CA on an application like this and was concerned about stability of the end product. I'll do that and face each ring as I go and applying the tenon last. Appreciate the input.

Inserting a spacer in a stem
I'm hoping that someone here can provide some solution to an issue I'm having both turning and integrating a wood embellishment ring to a stem. Can't believe that this hadn't been run into by others and solved. I'm using a wood lathe to true up the face of my stem and I can insert a delrin tenon. Th...

Re: Volcano
Thank you both for comments. I have read that you really need to have an idea about what the finished product will look like before you get into - hence the value of sketching something out beforehand. That point was driven home on this pipe as I really had no idea what the transition from bowl area...
Volcano
Everyone of these I do turns into quite a learning experience. This one felt like a lot more work than others - especially trying to get a respectably straight line where the bottom of the pipe transitions to the convex top portion while still maintaining overall symmetry. Don't know if I didn't get...
Re: Prince
Thanks Jeremiah. Regardless of whether a prince bowl does slip below the shank or not, my intent was not to have that happen. In fact, previous pipe critiques have mentioned the 'chin' but in looking at the pics, there is a definite kink and dip. Must be some mental block or something. Thanks for yo...
Prince
Never owned this style much less tried to make one. It's #8 for me and am trying to target areas that get mentioned from previous feedback. Stem length is one of the the things I keep looking at on this one - don't know if it works on this or not. Your critique is much appreciated. Thanks, Pat https...
