Try drawing on paper first. It's a good thing to do while smoking in the easy chair. Trace out the rough dimensions of the block on paper and draw a pipe inside it. Go through as many drawings as you need to. Once you have something you like cut it out and trace it to the block. Keep any templates y...

The bamboo apple (left, second up) is just my style. Very Nice.

Good luck at the show.

I just got back from the tourney and am now pounding margaritas and smoking a pipe. We took first place with 17.38 lbs (30 fish) and won Big Fish with a 1.10 lb shell cracker. All in all we caught easily 100 fish; we had two 5 gallon buckets and a cooler stuffed with fish. It WAS a hoot, and much mo...

Hmm, splitcane, Montana, fake e-mail and red string. Got it. Wal-Mart has a bunch of polarized sunglasses for about $5 each, do you think that if I repackage them I could use them to upsell my new fishin' poles? "And for only $85 more I'll toss in these fish spotting optics!" I caught a me...

NvilleDave If you are going to use that to piece of bamboo for a pipe shank then you are going to have to treat the wood. A method practiced by the people in Dandakaranya region in India is to fell the culms with branches intact and keep them standing upright under the sun for two weeks. The branch...

Paul, You really grew this stuff for them fishin' poles, didn'ya? Ain't got nothin' ta do with no pipes. Rad I had considered crafting some handmade bamboo fly rods to sell to those nutty fly fishermen. I hear one can get up to $2500 for a highfalootin' bamboo fishin' pole if they doctor it up righ...

Paul, exactly what is the variety of the bamboo pictured, and how/where did you obtain it? Good luck, hope you can keep that stuff where you want it. The variety I chose for the pipe material use was Phyllostachys aurea - 'GOLDEN BAMBOO' . It is supposed to grow to 20' and we are using it as a scre...

Paul Tatum squares with a mitre saw. He's got some kind of funky blade on the thing that cuts very well. Chop, chop, chop, chop, and the block is square. Personally, I don't have room for a mitre saw, but it is tons quicker. Also, the thing intimidates me - hands so close to a spinning blade and al...

Caning is a popular thing here in The South, but it refers to a craft that fixes worn out rocking chairs and is usually the preferred profession of retired furniture workers. Of course, you have to stick a sign out in the front yard to get any business. The sign I saw daily whilst growing up in Davi...

Coleen Learned

I got back home for a visit today and in my stack of mail was the P&T magazine. I was shocked to see the memorial for Coleen Learned. This was my first news of this. I always made a point to go see the Learneds at pipe shows. I'll miss Coleen.

First Harvest!

Three years ago I made a minimal investment in a couple of bamboo plants. One variety was mainly for pipes, being of the 20 ft high and giving the proper geometry for stem extensions. The other variety, 70 ft high, was mainly for neighbor screening and general eccentricity but that's another story.....

Little on the bulk side, but then if it was mine I would smoke bulk tobacco in it anyway. Hmm, I smoke a lot of flake tobacco. I wonder what that says about my pipes... So Windigopher, what's the scoop on Utah meerschaum? I've never heard of it. Perhaps it could be something to look into. I'd love ...

It was very loud, but I had ear plugs in. When the sound reached us the crowd jumped. Thursday I took a tour and one stop was the missile range and I had the privilege of seeing a TOW missile demolish a tank. That was over on the ARMY side of course. They also let us take turns flying a Black Hawk s...

There was a 48" (diameter) motor test at the base today. I took pictures. The motor is 1/6 scale to the shuttle solid rocket booster, same fuel and basic configuration but only 24' tall. I've compiled the pictures into a windows media file which is about 2 meg iirc. It's like a slide show but t...
