Re: Where and how to start?

Welcome :) I'm new here myself and just recently finished my first pipe. It was a freaking blast and I definitely have the bug now! Just about to start shaping my second. Good luck on your first stain and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Chestnut brand stains from the U.K.

I ordered some. I'm going to go ahead and try that green and blue contrast, so I ordered some. Should be in the mail tomorrow as I ordered it from a local dealer. I'll let you all know what I think.

Re: Triple Contrast Stain?

I'm going to give it a try and see what happens. I will of course try it on a piece of scrap first. If I don't like it, I won't do it on a pipe. Thanks everyone.

Re: Chestnut brand stains from the U.K.

Reading up on this stain, it turns out they are 5% shellac, which I thought interesting as it seems using shellac as a way to set the stain is common here (I'm of course just assuming this after reading some posts on staining and finishing). From the article... The colors also have a 5% shellac cont...

Re: Triple Contrast Stain?

Regardless of color then, what would be a good way to go about achieving that? Would be as simple as just moving from darker colors to lighter to highlight the grain? Or would the second and third colors just cancel one of the others out?

Triple Contrast Stain?

I'm just curious. I understand the concept of contrast staining. At least I think I do.... Stain with a dark color, sand, and stain with a lighter color and so on. But how about a triple contrast stain? I've only recently completed my first pipe, so I have a lot to learn. But I'm thinking of trying ...

In The Company Of Giants

In the company of giants. Well, that's about how I feel right now while writing my first post. I've browsed the forum, reading some of the posts, looking at some of the beautiful pipes created by the members here, many of you I understand are well known in the pipe world, and I feel absolutely tiny....
