Re: Sanding steps before buffing

See, lots of ways to skin the cat. I will gently comment to those using a grits above 600: you don't have to. Some would even say you don't have to go above 400. I'd suggest that if you are getting better results going that far, you could save some time researching methods that get you there withou...

Re: Staining the shank face

You should either stain the shank face entirely or be careful not to get any stain on the shank face at all. I like the look of a stained shank face, so that's what I do. Contrast staining the shank face is a bit more challenging, but a detail some guys like to observe. I would recommend getting a ...

Re: Sanding steps before buffing

I normally go slack sander or rasp then file, start sanding and staining at 320, 400, 600, 800, 1200, (1500 or even 2000 at times depending on wood hardness(resins in pores and pore structure)) I put my top coat of stain on around 800-1200 depending on wood. using multiple (2-3) topcoats normally I ...

Re: The current state of this forum

I hope I am not overstepping here as I have not been that involved in the forum. What I have heard personally from many people myself is exactly what Tyler was saying with one addition, that kind of showed itself in this post. It has been stated that guys feel unwelcome due to the first reaction fro...

Re: First "commission" :) stubby chubby brandy with tegus

one thing to remember on sandpaper, the cheaper stuff can have particles come loose and roll over under the sandpaper that can cause deep scratches, to get around that on lower git sandpaper (and cheaper cost for each pipe in consumables), I don't use them lol. I use a rasp and knives for shaping, f...

Re: First "commission" :) stubby chubby brandy with tegus

It looks very nice! As for the nit pick stuff, the bottom of the bowl seems to have a heat line from your chamber bit and the line shine on the top of the shank has a odd reflection with the light, is their a possible very small wow in the top of the shank? from side shot it dos not look like it but...

Re: Pipe Carvers Guild?

Just for the bystanders here, Sparky and I have exchanged a few messages. I find him totally reasonable, epathetic to concerns, and basically not a dickhead at all. Disseminating pipe-making info is a good thing. I try and only be a dickhead on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, SOOO i wont be p...

Re: Pipe Carvers Guild?

The word itself is a big hill to climb. Here's the classic definition: A guild is an association of artisans or merchants who control the practice of their craft. The earliest types of guild were formed as confraternities of tradesmen. They were organized in a manner something between a professiona...

Re: Pipe Carvers Guild?

I'm all for constructive criticism Scott, and your heart genuinely seems to be in the right place, and placing that against "shit talk" is correct - and there is and has been too much shit-talk on this board for its own good imho. C'est la vie. I hate strata-oriented professional associat...

Re: Pipe Carvers Guild?

Scott, I appreciate that you're an absolute gentleman. It's in everybody's best interest to help guys early on to recognize criteria which make a pipe sellable and it's good to know that there are other people doing that. And for those guys who thrive with a guild hierarchy system, you've got somet...

Re: Pipe Carvers Guild?

Scott, Well done. You are a very reasonable man and your response is very professional. I understand what the guild is about now and it is a good thing you are doing. I am not sure about how it really qualifies as a classic guild, but I really do not have a knowledge of these things. I do not have ...

Re: Pipe Carvers Guild?

The guild is a support for carvers to learn from fellow carvers in a environment that is comfortable with constructive criticism instead of shit talk. The ranking system is the same type that has been used and is used to this day for guilds around the world, it not only helps the carver want to keep...
