Drilling Speeds

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a drilling speed chart available, or if anyone could help me figure out what speeds would be best for drilling certain things. I know most of you use lathes, but I am only able to work with a drill press. I don't know if speeds would vary between the two, ...

Re: Briar wood suppliers and cuts

Starting pipe making with high grade briar is like learning to drive with a ferrari. Wouldn't that be nice.... Thanks for the advice Jeremiah. it is much appreciated. Sometimes my ideas get a little far ahead of my talent and my wallet. I guess that could be a good thing and a bad thing at the same...

Re: Briar wood suppliers and cuts

Jeremiah, Steve is who I have used so far. Any suggestions on cuts and sizes for someone who doesn't have a sand blast cabinet. Obviously grade 3 isn't on my radar.

Briar wood suppliers and cuts

Hey guys, I have been working for a while with some Algerian Plateaux that I bought a while back, and have had pretty good luck so far. I am getting ready to purchase some more wood, and wanted to seek some suggestions on what to purchase (Algerian/Italian) different grades, and where to get a good ...

Re: Mandrel for Buffing with a bench grinder.

Andrew, I don't have a lathe yet. Hopefully some day in the future I will. I just recently got my first motor to begin using sanding discs for shaping. I took one of the Buffing Combination 1/2" - 5/8" Adaptors that i purchased from Beall off of my bench grinder to attach to the motor shaf...

Mandrel for Buffing with a bench grinder.

I recently purchased a Beall Tool Co. buffing kit, which came with a mandrel to attach the buffing pads to my slow speed bench grinder. I purchased a second mandrel for the opposite side of the grinder so that I could have two discs on at the same time, making things faster. I am having a problem wi...

Discarded pallets turned into........

Before I began making pipes, my girlfriend and I did a lot of projects with recycled shipping pallets. We spent hours together taking apart pallets and transforming them into some pretty cool objects. Here are a few photos of our work together! If you want to check out some more of our builds, or wo...

Re: Sanding steps before buffing

Buffing right on the briar for a final finish is going to give you a texture. You need something to fill in the micro-pore space of the wood and tack down the stain so it doesn't leech off on the smokers' hands. Thinly cut shellac. What is your definition of thinly cut shellac? Are you mixing norma...

Importance of Shellac ??

Can someone explain the idea of using shellac, and the importance to me? I read some of the threads on mixtures that people are using, but have yet to experiment. I have been sanding my pipes to 1500 grit, then buffing with tripoli, white diamond, then adding carnauba wax, and lastly using a clean b...

Re: Sanding steps before buffing

Thanks for the tips. I haven't really had issues with the stain sinking in well, and have been pretty satisfied with the result, but found it difficult and tedious to sand off the base layer of stain with 1500 grit sandpaper. It takes forever, but does look really nice when finished. I just thought ...

Sanding steps before buffing

Hey guys, This forum has a lot of information about sanding, buffing, polishing, etc, but I can't find a specific answer to a question that I have, so I figured I would ask it. What is considered to be an adequate level of sanding before applying a contrast stain? For example, my sanding process so ...
