Re: Eliminating tiny light gaps
The dragging idea was a bit scary to me just because of the idea of chatter or uneven pressure on the material. Instead of dragging it, I took a full sheet of sandpaper and laid it on my hard flat surface, pressed the piece down that I needed to sand as hard as I could into the sandpaper and then sp...

Re: Eliminating tiny light gaps
I tried exactly what George’s video suggested regarding the hard surface and sandpaper, and my light gap is gone. I appreciate you saving me a ton of time and aggravation!!!

Re: Eliminating tiny light gaps
Does this seem like something that would work? (you asked)... Such squaring tools work fine in theory, but not in practice. Here's why, as well as an approach that does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waZaX9JRREs&list=PLFwwtvtKlXW-Xxqb-aVzhJ9vX-qeNUKx0&index=1 Thanks George! That video is ...

Eliminating tiny light gaps
I am working on a bamboo shanked pipe with a reverse tenon and have just glued on my 2mm plate ebonite spacer. After drilling my stem and fitting the stem, I have the most minimal of light gaps, and cannot seem to eliminate it. While the stem material was still chucked into the wood lathe, I have tr...

Cleaning Pillar Files
Is there any special trick to getting pillar files clean? I have a #2 and #4, and they get super gummed up when I am using them on acrylic stems. I have been trying to be delicate in cleaning them so that I don’t damage the teeth. I’ve used a brass brush, but it doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. I...

Re: PITH 2019!!!
Hey Guys, I am going to have to drop out of this years PITH. I have not seen much shop time at all in the last few months due to lots of unexpected circumstances, and time has gotten away from me. I have yet to finish a single pipe and don't want to try to put something together that is not my best ...

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
Update. We disconnected the wiring from the motor to the VFD. We had the ground wire connected to the INS wires, which was causing the OC issue. We then reconnected our other wires, and were able to get the motor to function correctly. It was running clockwise, so we switched T1 and T3 to make it sp...

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
With connecting the 3 phase motor from the VFD to the wires of the motor, do we connect the ground wire from the VFD to the INS wires of the motor? Or would that be why we are having the issue with over current? Should I be leaving the INS wires unconnected to anything coming from the VFD, and groun...

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
I have the motor and the VFD hooked up correctly, but when I go to turn it on, I get an OC fault. We have double checked all of the connections, and everything is correct. Is it something within the programming that we are missing that is preventing the drive from running the motor? We went through ...

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
I am looking for motors in my surrounding area, and am not having any luck. I may opt for the Automation Direct motor and VFD. If i go that route, is there anything else that I need to by aside from wiring/plug in order to make the entire setup work? I see on their website that they recommend an AC ...

Re: VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
Thanks for the advice everyone. Being that I have no experience in this category, Is there any VFD that you can recommend, or any to stay away from? There are so many different motors all with different specifications, so with my limited knowledge, it can get overwhelming. I am noticing that there a...

VFD basics for shaping wheel motor
Let me start out by saying I have ZERO electrical experience, so these questions may seem like common sense things to most of you. Can you add a VFD to any motor? I currently have a dryer motor that I have set up for my shaping wheels and buffing. I believe it is 1/2 hp and know it is 1725-1750 rpm....

Re: Bulk Briar Orders
I appreciate all of your input. I am going to place an order with Steve in the near future once he gets re-stocked after the Chicago show. I am sure all of you guys who can make it out there will take your pick of the best blocks available at that time, and rightfully so. I feel as though it would b...

Re: Bulk Sandpaper Recommendations
Thanks guys. I have never skipped 320 in the past. I typically shape with 80 grit, sand with 120, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800 and so on. I will stick to that same method, as it has been reliable thus far. I will just upgrade to a new paper, and continue on as usual.

Bulk Briar Orders
Hello everyone. For a while now I have wanted to place a larger order of briar blocks to store for future pipes. I am interested in purchasing some blocks from Mimmo or Makis directly. I had a few questions that I felt you might be able to answer before I reach out to them. If I do order, would I ha...

Re: Bulk Sandpaper Recommendations
I am finally financially able to make a bulk sandpaper purchase and am going to go with the Klingspor. What I am unsure of is what type of paper I should be purchasing. From checking out woodworking shop.com they have about 7 different types of paper to choose from. Silicon carbide Klingspor gold al...
