Re: Bent Pipes: Shank angles and Curves - Two Case Studies

I don't want to stir the pot, but for the purpose of studying and understanding shapes, what about skaters? I have two that definately have bowls that are lower after the bend, one which has a reverse bend similar to the first iteration of the bamboo shank Mr. Cannoy posted. They're not amateur, but...

Re: Smoking?

Broke open my second-to-last tin of Escudo from '13, three coins in an early eighties Edwards zulu. Heavenly. How do people age this stuff? I can't keep it in my cellar!

Smokindawg just made me jaws for my jet 920 and to echo others, they work great. A true gentleman, to boot.

Re: brass on shank

IMO the length of the accent doesn't harm at all- I'd prefer a taper bit, think it'd look sharp, but I agree with previous comments, full saddle as opposed to half. Would be pleased having that hanging from my lip :D .

Re: No. 9 pipe Cavalier

Really nice pipe, sir. Finish looks great, I love the "backbone". Does it sit, or stand on the end cap? If I were to change anything I might put less bend on the stem, but I'd be proud of that pipe as is.

Re: Pipe #4

It looks like more wood can come off the chin and the shank. To my eye the angle on the front of the bowl looks slightly too extreme, more off the chin will help, but it should still be more gradual a curve to the chin.

Re: My Second Pipe

Nice second pipe. Take a look at some other dublins in the gallery and you'll see a lot of feedback that applies here (shank work, bowl shape refinement, stem work). More likely why you're hearing crickets.

You could try q-tips or a soft bristle toothbrush. Others may have better suggestions.

Invest in a stamp. Or if you want carve your maker's mark, do it before staining, buffing and waxing.

Re: Belt sander

Seems interesting because of potential versatility, but it looks pretty pricey compared to benchtop belt sanders and especially belt/disc combos- you can find cheapies on ebay for half the price this product.

Hey, that looks like Fred Rogers. If that guy gives me the finger, I listen. You ever see this speech? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXEuEUQIP3Q Sasquatch, thanks for that link. I miss Fred Rogers, and it gave me goosebumps too. 'Course, you just went from big and hairy to warm and fuzzy. :D

I think when it comes to feedback and critique, comments should be accepted and thanked for. Easy for me to say since I've yet to post something in the gallery...
