Good advice. :)
I see now what I failed to see before, that sometimes things are so bad the only critique worth getting is "try again". I'll do that.

Re: Lazarus, back from the dead

So odd that after that whole thread on people not taking criticism well, here I can't seem to get criticized at all. :) Two votes for "you shouldn't have bothered trying" but still no direct feedback on how to do things better. come on guys, I'm putting myself out there. Like I said, I did...

Re: Lazarus, back from the dead

that valid point notwithstanding, my goal was to try to come back from what I thought was a lost cause and learn something in the process.

criticism of how I could have done better (after the screwup) would be much appreciated. I can accept that you wouldn't have bothered.

Lazarus, back from the dead

Ok so here I post a pipe not so much because I'm proud of what it is , but because I'm happy with where it isn't ...namely "in the trash can" I mis-drilled this stummel, got pissed and threw it against a wall, breaking the shank off (classy, I know). I pulled it out of the trash and inlaye...

just found this in the shop...4 jaw chuck

will this be useful for holding briar?
I'm guessing I should remove 2 of the jaws....

Re: AGGGH frustrated!

Thanks everyone. Today I took way more time and thought about exactly what I was doing. It too me about 2 minutes of staring at the calipers to realize why I have been misdrilling. I've been measuring tobacco chamber depth incorrectly each time (long story). But I now realize that every time I drill...

Thanks all

SLOW. Thats my mantra starting tomorrow.
I have screwed up 3X straight because I've been trying to make progress with too much else on my mind. 2 kids, puppy, work, wife, etc....

tomorrow I'll triple check before making a move....
more to come.

Re: replacing entire shank

How close can delrin get to the tobacco chamber?
What if I turn an integral tenon, does that change the answer depending on material?

replacing entire shank

In the wake of several errors, I find myself wondering what I can learn with my pile of mistakes. I have a good start on a brandy but the shank is complete crap. I just cut it off very near the bowl. Do I have an option for using something else to replace a short shank entirely (other than bamboo)? ...

AGGGH frustrated!

I'm just about ready to quit.
I just destroyed my third pipe in a row. I either mis-drill or take off too much material, putting me into an airway or a chamber.

3 in a row!
Is this normal? I guess I'm learning the limits in some respect, but I just want to finish a nice pipe for crying out loud.

Re: No. 9 pipe Cavalier

Did you end up drilling it like a cavalier as well? I think I read elsewhere that this was more of an aesthetic piece than a fully engineered pipe.
Either way, its gorgeous.
the ebonite work is just beautiful.

Re: turning oversized tenon from scrap ebonite

why not turn the tenon on the stem I'm using: -because I drilled it for delrin but screwed up the mortice and had to re-drill the mortice oversized why not just use delrin: -I could do, but I don't have it on hand, whereas I DO have the ebonite and turned down the tenon to fit. in other words, I don...

turning oversized tenon from scrap ebonite

I plan to turn down an oversized tenon from a big chunk of ebonite. Any reason I can't cut this off and use it just like a delrin tenon (i.e., epoxy the ebonite tenon into a different ebonite stem)?

Re: question about air hole below mortice

so on a lathe you would chuck the dowel and then put the dowel into the mortice, spin the whole stummel by the shank and face it with the cutting tool facing to the right?

Re: question about air hole below mortice

Hey Ryan why is that preferable to putting the stummel in a drill-press vice, facing the shank with a forster bit and then drilling the new mortice while still in the vice? That would ensure that its all in line eh? and do I want Bob to be my uncle or do I NOT want Bob to be my uncle? thats a new on...

Re: question about air hole below mortice

Ok I think I'm going to try to combine the best of all of these ideas. I took a slice off the shank which brought the air hole closer to the mortise. Now I plan to reface the shank and then re-drill the mortice with a larger bit (3/8" per Sas). This plan is: a. excellent b. a shit show waiting ...

Re: Bulldog no. 1

I am not qualified to review this beautiful pipe, so my critique is, I hope, more of a conversation starter. To my eye, there is a small indentation about 1/3 of the way down the back of the bowl. It seems to me that this is where the top of the bowl should be, such that the rings are nearer the top...

Re: question about air hole below mortice

Interesting Sas, that you use a narrow airway in this pipe shape. I used 11/32 based on your other points about large airways being better. The lessons continue i guess. Wayne, why go through the exercise of removing the sliver of briar? Is it just to avoid having it break later and leave an unfinis...
