my first thought is that the rounding over of the stem where it meets the shank indicates that you're making your stem and pipe separately...you should keep the stem on the pipe from the moment you start sanding to keep the joint flush.

first billiard

i have one store bought pipe, a stanwell billiard. This is my first attempt at a billiard and I tried to clone the stanwell.

Its the first time I've taken stain off while buffing....not sure what went wrong there.

If you really want to get better at making pipes, it will help a lot for you to draw a shape you want to achieve and then post the drawing along with the pipe. Others will also tell you that winging a shape of your own is less of a growth exercise than attempting a classic style with well-defined pr...

Still improving. The shank clearly flares a bit and I'd like the stem to bend more gracefully.

Draw it on paper. Drawing it on the block is good for an initial reference, but you're going to be replacing lines every time you file/sand. Drawing pipes on paper will actually help you a lot in recognizing what lines look good and which do not (this coming from a guy who is entirely clueless about...

I also think the first version was better. In addition to the scratches (Im sure that at some point you just wanted to be done with this one eh?), and the overdone emphasis on the bowl (which I think is subjectively ok but probably a bit too much), you changed the symmetry from front to back of the ...

can someone walk me through this?
