I too have tried crafting with brazillian cherry. Hard doesn't do it justice and the dust is just nasty. The finished pipe smoked ok, but it took forever to sand the damn thing smooth. Now with a lathe, you might have better luck. I don't know anyone who has spun the stuff, so if you do, I'd like to...

Well here's what I have in mind. Tightening the screw forces the robber drum to expand...just like the Dremel drum. The metal tube could perhaps be a drilled dowel, and I'm sure everyone would have there own preference of length ect...the shank would have to be long enough to fit in the vice with th...

Ben, I've been thinking of how I can make a similar tool. I know what a pain in the ass it is to strip sand and have the stummel turning on the dowel. I've been meaning to go to lowes and look through their specialty hardware section for parts to make such a device. When and if I manage to fabricate...

Wax Problem
Hopefully someone can help me out. I've got 3 dedicated smokers that I've made and on all three of them, the wax is coming off around the stummel. Two of them have farily thin walls and they tend to smoke a bit hot, but the other is a very mild smoker and it's pretty much deviod of any wax. My finis...

Well, I'm fairly new at this myself. I started with a PIMO kit. A box-like pipe is probably the easiest to make, and probably a good place to start. Make, smoke it, and if you later decide that you would rather have a rounded shape, just take more wood off...pipes are cool that way. As for shaping w...

Thanks guys. This weekend, I'm gonna reheat the stem of the top pipe and soften that bend up a bit. Ben, I've made 8 so far not counting the 2 that went striaght to the fireplace because of mis-drilling. I've found my french curve set very handy for laying out designs like these. Since I don't own a...

Well, I've been quite busy in the shop. Here are two that I finished over the weekend. The briar came from JH Lowe and I a very happy with the quality of the brair Tim selected for me..of course that may have been sheer luck. Maybe a bit too much bend in the stem on this one: http://www.hamiltonwood...

Thought I'd show pipes 4 and 5. Both are considerably better in my opinion. The ebauchons are from PIMO and had some pits, but they are mere cosmetic and actually add a little character. http://hamiltonwoodworks.com/pipe/bent2.jpg This one has an oval stem. The shadows make this look asymetrical...m...

Thanks guys. I've spent the last two night working on #4, which I think it my best yet. It's a very tiny little thing, but that's mainly due to the briar I was using(full of little pits etc). I took my time and checked and double-checked the symmetry and *carefully* worked the rim out. I'll try to g...
