Re: Tenon and Mortise help.
So, first you gotta figure out what's tapered, the tenon or the mortise, and you might need calipers for that. Calipers are super, super handy in pipe making anyway. My guess knowing the jet is that there's just a bit of run-out, looseness in the tailstock as you move it and it's allowing a bit of w...

Re: Briar jaws - 1 3/4 x 8 spindle
That's the easiest solution, because it leaves you able to spin rod in the 3 jaw chuck (something the 2 jaw, a torn down 4 jaw, isn't as good at, and you'd have to take the jaws off and fuck around with it anyway). So it's going to cost a bit, but buying a Oneway talon chuck, basically some random a...

1 3/4" diameter and 8tpi you mean? That's big. Do you have any sort of chuck for it?

Re: Slot Cutting
I measured a pretty average slot yesterday on one of my pipes, and it was 1.7mm by about 8mm wide. I haven't seen a machine-cut slot under 2 mm. The precision of the milling machine is admirable, but I can cut a slot by hand in less time than it takes you to put a stem in the vise and line things up...

Re: Slot Cutting
That would be a little bigger than most of us (but not all) are cutting, if you can hit something like that, that's fine.

Re: Big catch. Ruined Stummel.
I run the triangle carbide cutters on the metal lathe, no issues.
What chuck have you got, and are you tightening it correctly? ie are you tightening at all holes where the key can go in?

Re: Big catch. Ruined Stummel.
My suspicion is that your tools aren't sharp enough. They have to be razor sharp, and angled appropriatley for hard wood (a slightly larger angle for the sharpening, a thicker cutter as it were). I was turning normal wood just fine, making chess sets from walnut and stuff, no issues, and briar just ...

Re: Best Stem Length For This Dublin
That's the only way to move forward. I sent 5 pipes to a friend recently, a small time retailer. He's happy with them. But one of them he's having a hard time selling - he wants to keep it. And I also thought it was the best of the bunch. There's nothing wrong with the other pipes, but when that one...

Re: Italian acrylic rod vs other acrylic rod
Chi Hsing Tzu was a trainer of fighting roosters for King Hsuan. He was training a fine bird. The king kept asking if the bird was ready for combat. “Not yet”, said the trainer. “He is full of fire. He is ready to pick a fight with every other bird. He is vain and confident of his own strength.” Aft...

Re: Italian acrylic rod vs other acrylic rod
So, I went and did something here, I looked through my lists on facebook, to see if I could find you, Josh. And I have done, and what this allows, what this helps with, is it personalized things - it makes it so it's not just usernames and a keyboard. It's people. You obviously know who I am too, so...

Dude, you are barking up the wrong fucking tree. I posted the link I posted because it's great. It's true. And it's you. You don't think it's you, but it is. You can't just buy the same briar and rod everyone else does, you want an angle. Okay. Have it. But don't expect anyone to care about it. Is y...

Sorry, no, stem = stummel, meant to type "half the pipe". Draw it out, draw ten pipes and pick one.

I've got a few spoons marked out in maple and walnut... I should finish 'em up. Is there a market for them or is it just more crap for my wife?
either way, welcome aboard.

Re: Best Stem Length For This Dublin
I agree, I don't think it's a math thing so much as "what does the pipe look like". If you establish a hugely tapering shank, maybe that's going to point to a shorter stem to carry those lines. Likewise a super long thin stummel probably gets a long thin stem to carry the idea. What you ha...

And there's lot of other much more difficult stuff done well here, the saddle stem is flat and has good edges, it looks thin, the curve is lovely.

Re: The pipe that got a second chance
No, it's not worth attacking again, and it's pretty good as is, just wanted to point out what I see as a discrepancy between the idea the top of the shank is presenting, and the actual pipe shape as provided by the bowl as is/where is.
