Re: Sycamore

Looks like you shouldn't let your horse smoke a sycamore pipe.

All woods contain some amount of sensitizer/allergen/poison. Will you die if you smoke a pipe made from sycamore? Probably not. Should you burn all kinds of sycamore and smell the fumes? Probably not.

Re: Name that stain?

Truth about the briar for sure, I have two pipes both stained same color, same day, same process, and they are totally different outcomes.

Re: Not ready for prime time... but ya gotta start somewhere

What's funny is, it looks like a really good Italian pipe, fused with a British pipe, and that means it's American.

Re: Name that stain?

On a textured pipe, cordovan does this: https://i.imgur.com/7FClVKJ.jpg It's too dark for Chocolate, too brown for oxblood or red, the "dark brown" is less red, so I'm not sure, but Feibings has another handful of browns and there are other dye suppliers with other colors too (Angelus etc)...

Re: Bent vs. Straight

That's one of the cheats a guy has available - changing the chamber angle.

Changing the chamber shape is also a possibility, either through drilling it at successive angles or hand-tooling. Tobacco is for the most part, pretty stupid stuff, and unaware of the exact shape of its container.

Sure, if someone wants to give you money for something, you do that thing. Happens here all the time too.

Re: Magnum Liverpool

The only thing I kinda don't like here is the thickness of the shank compared to the bowl height - it's like a magnum pot because of it.

Re: Bent vs. Straight

Sure, another way to word your bolded section might be to say that Jack has laid out conditions of sufficiency for an excellent pipe - build it like so and it will be excellent. What I'm saying is I can agree with those sufficiency conditions, but because they aren't "necessity" conditions...

Re: Bent vs. Straight

One of my absolute best smoking pipes is a Castello that I think they drilled the airway on twice, and missed it both times, and then they went and found it from the bowl. It's a fucking mess. And it smokes sublimely, top 3. And that really pisses my off because I believe in all this stuff, I believ...

Re: Fourth billiard

Token criticism: the blade of the stem is a little "paddle" shaped, and that is in no way beneficial or harmonious with the rest of the shaping. A more definite line on the sides of the stem would improve the pipe.

Re: Billiard Attempt Based On Information Provided From My Last Attempt And The Comments Shared

That Ropp has a nice bowl shape. The shank is pretty fat, it would be called an LB in the Dunhill catalog. And yet I'll bet if I break it down in terms of proportion, it's really exact. Lemme try. https://i.imgur.com/3ZCHmzX.jpg I draw a line from the top of the bowl to the shank. I draw the same le...

Re: Billiard Attempt Based On Information Provided From My Last Attempt And The Comments Shared

You took 1/4" off, leaving the bowl... 1/4" short compared to ... not the Ropp, but compared to the whole rest of your pipe (which is longer than the ropp). If you are using that Ropp as a guide, the whole pipe has to be the guide. So yours it pottish now, bowl too short for the shank and ...
