I was thinking that Frank. Heck I would pay 50 bucks for a nice thorough updated book with pics and maybe have it entail a bit more specics and intricate details. I think much of it is here on the forum but it would be nice to compile it into a text. I prefer books over online reading...although I a...

Contrast staining
My first pipe is ready for color. I have read many of the posts here..great stuff and thank you. I want to create a really good contrast on this pipe. I'd like to have some really dark lines and then a bright orangey tone. I don't want a pumpkin color but just a nice bright orange and have the dark ...

Thanks guys! I recently carved my first pipe with a coping saw and used a horse hoof file to rough it in. I then sanded it down to shape with 60 grit, by hand. I decided to change stems and redrilled for the new stem and then cracked the damn shank. But all in all I was quite happy with the pipe...e...

I am shopping around for a good lathe to carve pipes. Any thoughts about this lathe would be appreciated.

Thanks for sharing that Todd. I think that could be said for almost every profession...its lots of hard work, there are often hard mistakes involved and you pay your dues early on....AND hanging out the the big guys speeds up the learning curves for sure. If I was younger guy, I would love to try an...

Drill first, shape later?
From all the reading and vids I have seen, I noticed that everyone drills the chamber and draft holes first and then shapes the pipe. Am I wacky but wouldn't it be better to carve the shape first and then drill the holes later? Before I ever saw a video, this is what I thought was done, shape first ...

Kurts sanding discs
I am somewhat attracted to Kurt's large sanding discs. Do these things have a soft cushioned back? How do you adhere sandpaper to them? (glue, hook and looped etc?) I am assuming that you can mount these up to just about anything such as an electric motor, lathe or maybe even mount one in a large ha...

Noobie here just saying hi
Hi all, Thanks to the guys who made this forum, all the great stuff here and all the contributors. I have read alot of the material and watched all the various videos. Thanks! I just ordered a pre-bored block from Mark Tinsky and will be attempting to carve my first pipe. After reading many of the p...
