WOW, you've done nice work and if it works for you - use it.
I use a small candle.
PS Band saw, belt sander and other tools I keep in every room. Wife always yell when briar dust is found in the kitchen )))

I am not expert, but I guess first pipe should be apple. From first picture you can find what I mean - back side. From other positions looks good.

I guess using belt sander will work better - you can make shank end more straight.

About the ring - I was told already about it by ukrainian and russian pipemakers. I just didn't want to crap it and finish asap. Before crack it looked like this:
