Re: Hedegaard grading

Maybe it's "FP3" and the "P" didn't stamp good or was polished off so it just looks like a "T" Is that posible?

Re: this is hard to categorize

I think you're being too hard on yourself, with the "pretty sad." It's not a bad looking pipe, kind of unusual, not bad at all, I think.

Re: Tossed together a website...

Not a bad site, but kind-of generic. Who cares. It's the pipes that are important, anyway. You probably already know, your rusticated (asphalts) are a sensation.

Re: Churwarden "Umbonia Crassicornis"

It looks like it grew right out of something. I don't like to apply the term "organic" cuz it sounds like a comment from a stinky hippy, but that thing is truly one of the more "organic" creations I've seen in quite a while. Wow. Hopefully I offended all the stinky hippies out t...

Re: The Finger - a special purpose pipemaker's tool

Just curious what percent of you guys sand the tobacco chamber? I've never done it. Will it make a pipe smoke better/break in quicker? I don't usually sand the whole chamber very much, if at all. I use the tools mainly to clean up any oddities at the smoke hole intersection, or where the grain angl...

The Finger - a special purpose pipemaker's tool

There's the obvious use for "The Finger" but I wasn't talking about that finger. This is a tool for sanding inside the tobacco chamber where your real finger can't reach. It's 5/16 in. thick, 5.5 in o.a. length, with a 2.5 in. long finger. You can tape a little piece of sandpaper on ...

Incredible..the bowl appears almost as though it was grown, instead of made.
Most Excellent pipe.

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

.... [1] The fact that you've been an artist (a painter, apparently) does not mean you can automatically be a pipe maker. [2] And thinking of the pipes you make as a continuation of your body of work and pricing them accordingly is silly. [3] Hell, a few months ago, you couldn't see the difference ...

Re: #6 and #7

Nice pipes. I especially like the first one. It's very creative the way the flat bottom runs through and then curves up at the end of the shank, and kind-of droopy looking on the sides like a boxer dog. Very nice. Too bad about all those crappy sand pits. c'est la vie.

Very classy, cool looking pipe. I like it.
You've made a lot of great looking pipes, and usually you post so many at one time, I get overloaded, and can't comment.

Re: A half bent fresh from the shop

Thanks guys! As to the faults, if I were to make this one again I'd probably make the mouthpiece just a bit shorter, and I think the back of the bowl could match the front better... But still I'm quite happy with it :) There's stain in the chamber because I was trying out some home-made chemical st...

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

Rad's idea about doing it for both, love and money, sounds fine. I've seen a lot of spectacular artists (and craftsmen) do this, I think, but one must be very careful not to let the money affect his judgement and methods in such a way that it compromises the results. But in favor of money, sometimes...

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

Mike, I think most sane people would agree with Rad on this one. You're not bad, your just not as good as most professional pipemakers. But, I'm glad you're here because you make me laugh. I think the key word you and some of the other guys are using is, "professional." "Professional...

Re: Problem with stems on bamboo

You can put a coat of nitrocellulose lacquer on the steel tenon to enlarge it a bit. It dries very hard and quickly. Then sand it smooth, and polish it. Try the fit. Add another coat if necessary, or sand more if the fit is too tight. This also works for ordinary wood mortise, ebonite tenon stem fii...

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

I read that. The key word in the title is "Excellence". Your pipes ain't it. Teddy has been making pipes his entire life and has EARNED the position he is in to be able to do what he does, because he worked his ass off, and he has a shitload of talent. You seem to gloss over the significa...

Re: How much time do you spend on the stem?

It took you two days to come up with THAT !!?? Bless your heart. That's just sad. Rad For the record, I'm not challenging your work methods. It's great and you produce a ton of work, like Picasso did paintings, but there are different approaches which are also valid. To confirm this, just read the ...

I'm hesitant to post this one because there's a lot that could have been done better from a design standpoint but here you go nonetheless.
