Colin, Welcome. I completely understand your motivation for making pipes but I have to warn you, it can be an expensive "hobby". If I had just invested the money I've spent on pipe making on my collection I could have some real high end artesian on pipes by now, LOL. I don't mean to discou...

Hey Betsy, Welcome. As to your question about pipe carving with limited access to tools, it could be a little challenging but not impossible. I would probably suggest you start with a pre-drilled pipe kit. You can find them at velrmontfreehand.com and rawkrafted.com to name a few. That way all you r...

Emil,
Thats a beautiful bowl! Love the spalted oak. At least something came out of an unfortunate
incident.

Hey Paul, Welcome. I was reading over your post and suddenly realized I've actually been to Alexandria, LA. That was the first time I'd had cracklins, étouffée and crawfish. I seem to recall a drive thru daiquiri place there that made some very strong drinks but I digress. Looking forward to seeing ...

Odissey, First, I'm no expert and not even a full-time carver so take my comments for what they're worth. You already touched on my first suggestion which is a smaller and more delicate ring on the stem of your second pipe but I understand the challenge without a lathe. Second, perhaps consider thin...

Hey Matt,
Welcome. How are the smoking regulations in L.A.? I lived in SoCal years ago and it was getting a little challenging to find good places to enjoy a pipe. Hopefully it hasn't gotten worse... Are there any good pipe shops left in LA County?

Steven, Welcome. You'll find lots of good folks and great info but I have to warn you, you're heading down a huge rabbit hole with pipe making. Its a wonderful journey but it becomes time consuming. A small bit of advice, if you have questions about a subject read up first because it has probably be...

Brett, I went to Numazu in the Shizuoka Prefecture, I was really just an extended vacation but would love to go back and spend much more time there. Got to check out Tokyo and Kyoto as well. Met some really great people, got to climb Mt. Fuji and had so really great food. Wish I could have hooked up...

Welcome Stephen, I understand your situation with regards to your "financial advisor"...I've had the same financial advisor of almost 15 years now and she was one of the main driving forces that got me to jump into pipe making. When you say darling I want to build a shop in the garage/hous...

Welcome Brett,
I too have spent a little time in Japan and LOVED it! Your point about having some contemplative time to smoke your pipe is so true, one of the things I really enjoyed over there. I look forward to seeing how your pipe making journey unfolds.

Welcome Patrick! Don't worry about your lack of skill in the english language, I don't speak French so you are clearly ahead of me. Besides you will see plenty of examples of very poor english from native speakers on this board  I will heading over to look at the pipes on your website shortly. ...

Thanks. I was surprised to see this come up after almost a year. I had been working with 40 yo scraps and odds and sods after setting up my lathe and drill press. It was a fun exercise to get my hand back in. I have since gotten some new briar from various sources and started cutting stems from rod...

LatakiaLover I read over your response and was kind of left shaking my head and going back to Brian's pics to see if I could see what you were talking about. I should have followed the link you posted first LOL. It became very apparent what you meant when I studied Tom Eltang's Eskimo. Everything lo...

Brian,
First let me say that I'm no expert on this shape but it seems like you nailed it. Very nice grain and stem work. The thought of trying that shape would make me a bit nervous as well. My focus has been in trying to nail the classics so the Eskimo is way outside my comfort zone. Nicely done.
