I haven't smoked the pipe yet, can't make up my mind on whether to sell it or smoke it.

I guess I should smoke it to see how it does since this is the first of this type. I will let you know how it smokes after a few bowls of tabacco.

It is actually four pices, the bowl and shank are briar and the two end pices are rosewood. I first drilled the tobacco chamber and left room at the bottom where I would later inlet it for half of the diamiter of the shank to fit. After shaping and cutting the space for the shank I glued the shank t...

Graig, I just replied to your post you made on this pipe in the Gallery forum. I enjoy making pipes just about as much as I do smoking them. I have made pipes and gave them to frinds. I think I'm just about to the point to where I would feel confident in selling one of my pipes and knowing the perso...

Craig, you know I was thinking the same thing. I posted a picture of this pipe on Pipes.Org, wasn't trying to sell it just showing my work, and someone asked if I would sell it to them. I haven't replied to his question yet but if I do sell it I will refinish it. How much would you ask for it, never...

Sell A Pipe That Doesn't Meet Your Standards ?

I have recently started making pipes, purchased a lathe, belt sander and other tools needed for this type of work. In the near future I plan on getting a website and trying to sell a few of them. I posted some pictures of a volcano pipe I finished a couple of weeks ago on this website and Pipes.Org....

I forgot to mention that I put a black delrin ring between the shank and extension. Sort of hard to see because of the color of the stain.

The extension is made from cherrywood. I wish I could find some other material for the extensions besides wood. Nothing exotic just some nice plastic marble material, cream, white clolors. Know where I might find some ? Thanks for the compliments on the pipe. It took me quite sometime to complete it...

The pipe is hand shaped, belt sander and a lot of the old sandpaper held in the hand. The only thing I used the lathe for was drilling the holes and shaping vulcanite stem, tenon.

First Volcano

This is my first attempt at making a Volcano. I think it turned out OK but I will go about making the next one a little different. I learn a little more from each new pipe.

Looks like a nice pipe, but you need to make your picture a little larger so we can get a good look.

Very nice Kurt, all three look great. You mentioned that two were finished in your tiger stripe, what is your process you use to achive this look. I'm about finished with a volcano I have been working on, will post pictures when complete, and the finish is almost identical to your tiger stripe. I us...

Alex, the 7"X12" lathe, 7" being the largest diameter you can mount in the chuck without touching the ways, 12" being the longest length you can mount between centers.

If you want to turn bowls get a wood lathe.

I don't know about a Taig or Sherline lathe but I have a Homier Chinese made 7"X12" metal lathe that I bought a 6" four jaw wood chuck for that I use to drill all the holes in the briar and stem, also use it to turn the tenons, shank extensions etc. The lathe comes with a 4" thre...

Suggestions For Next Pipe Style

Usally I wouldn't have any problem on deciding on a style of pipe for a particular block of briar but I have this one block that is very nice. It has fairly straight grain all around, sides, front and back. What I really like is the nice birds eye on the top and bottom. What style would be best suit...

I don't have a answer to your question but I just posted a question of my own about oil curing briar. Any information you can share with me on this subject would be appreciated. You can email me if you like, lib7273@msn.com.

Oil Curing Briar ?

My son , who just happens to be a pipe smoker also, recently purchased a few Dunhill pipes. He says that the Dunhills smoke a lot better than the other brand pipes he has, more flavor, taste, cooler. etc. This is with new ones and used estate Dunhill pipes. Some people say that Dunhill don't oil cur...
