Re: Pipe socks

Hopefully, my stamp will be done by then. DocAitch. Who are you using for that? I'm dying to find a company that will deliver as promised. I tried going through the guy regularly suggested here and I could never get him to fax me (his suggestion, not mine) a proof of the lettering as he said mine w...

Re: Pipe #2: Locomotive themed pipe

Ok, awesome. That's what I thought you meant but wanted to make sure you didn't mean something else.

Thank you so much for the tip, I will keep it in mind for the next one. :-)

Re: Pipe #2: Locomotive themed pipe

Thanks man! I frequently enjoy your work, so I take that as a good compliment. The first thing that struck my eye is the angle of the bottom of the bowl. I think it would look better if that bottom were parallel to the bottom line of the shank. Agreed completely. The entire bottom was longer, but it...

Pipe #2: Locomotive themed pipe

A good friend of mine requested that he get my second pipe. He's been the sort of guy that makes me a better person by just being "around" him, so I wanted to give him exactly what he wanted. His requests were that it be at least 2" deep, a decent sized button, and ideally it should b...

Re: My first pipe: Eskimo shape

A very hard shape for a first pipe. Hats off for trying! Thank you! I like to really challenge myself when I try new things. Bigger opportunity for a "miss", but even a mediocre "hit" feels good and inspires me to keep trying new things. I drew out the next pipe shape I'm workin...

Re: My first pipe: Eskimo shape

Very nice pipe and finish! I did notice some minor symmetry "bubbles" when comparing the two sides of the pipe, especially from the view from underneath. Light years ahead of my classic shapes! Keep carving : ) Thank you! Yeah, this shape was a beast. There are so many soft curves and wha...

Re: My first pipe: Eskimo shape

Challenging convention by re-inventing things that have been field-tested for a century by billions of smokers and settled on is not advised. In this case button shape. While there are subtle variations of it, none involve a "wrap around" design where it extends past the sides of the stem...

Re: My first pipe: Eskimo shape

Very nice first pipe. I think the lateral flare of the shank makes it look like it has mumps, but that is esthetics, and can be addressed in the next one. It is remarkable that you were that ambitious and brought it off so well. DocAitch Yeah, my next go-around with this shape I'll definitely keep ...

Re: My first pipe: Eskimo shape

Not bad at all for a first pipe. It's apparent that you did your research and applied some good concepts. I think, from the top looking down, the taper from the bowl to the button could be more gradual and less curvy. That would be the main thing that I see. You mentioned something about buffing wi...

My first pipe: Eskimo shape

About a year and a half ago I got a lathe, having had no woodworking experience prior to that. I instantly fell in love with woodworking, particularly turning. At the time I was fairly active in the cigar community, so I was fortunate that people were willing to essentially pay me to practice turnin...
