Long Term Briar Storage???

Hi Guys, Due to moving and family concerns, I have to put my pipemaking on hold for some time. I want to keep my briar and supplies in hopes of returning to pipemaking in the future. Right now I keep my briar in the house, but I won't have room for it soon. Will briar stored in an unheated garage su...

I've never used anything but the standard #2 profiled jaws. Haven't had a block fly out yet. Even the one I took the shank off with my knuckles while spinning on the lathe didn't move the block in the chuck. The Oneway Profiled jaws have far greater gripping power than the Nova Precision too.

I used a Nova Precision Midi Chuck with the standard set of spigot jaws when I started pipemaking but it didn't work very well. The size of block I could clamp in the chuck was severely limited. Been a while but if I remember right the Midi wouldn't handle any block 1-1/2" or larger. Switched t...

My only dealing with pipes.org was trying to add my website to their links page. I filled out the form but my link has never appeared. :?

I have heard from many people that they are heavy-handed with the censorship on that site.

I prefer shaping with a smaller disk. I went back to using my 3M stick-it 5" disks today and managed to make a total mess of the pipe! The power lock disks may be just the ticket!

John, he's a member of this forum. You might try sending him a PM and see if he'll respond. I think he and Joel Shapiro knew each other well so Joel might know how to contact him.

I do much of the rough shaping on my 10" disk sander, but that has limitations. It won't get into the bowl/shank junction and it has way too much torque to safely sand to a final shape. So I do use the wave disks for probably more wood removal than they are designed to do. However, I've been do...

Yep! I cut the waves off. These are the first ones I've had problems with them separating.

Sanding Disc Recommendations?????

For over a year I've been using 3" 'Wave' hook and loop sanding disks for rough shaping. The latest batch of wave discs I bought from Woodcraft are crap! The loop fabric isn't glued well to the sandpaper and every one I've used so far have come apart. Its not seriously dangerous, but not a lot ...

I've never ordered from Jamestown, but they were recommended when Bits-n-bores closed down. I'll bet McMaster Carr has them too.

I'd probaby go in as well. I missed out when Crosby sold some of his earlier this year. Amount I can order will depend on time and budget.

Out of curiosity.......why use pumice? I'm guessing it adds additional roughness to the coating when it is dried. Or is it something necessary in the waterglass recipe?

I precarb all my pipes unless someone asks for one without the precarb. I use the buttermilk/sour cream/charcoal recipe. About half and half buttermilk/sour cream then enough charcoal to make it black.

There is a bit of waste even for a small tamper. But it is the easiest method I've come up with so far. Now if I had a drill press, I could cut the diagonal pieces, drill them for a dowel and glue them up that way. Or if I wanted to do a lot of these I could make a clamping jig, but for a few I'll s...

The problem with the small bit falling out of your rotary tool can be resolved by getting a smaller collet. They usually sell different size collets where they sell the rotary tools. Rather than having a bunch of different collets, go with the keyless chuck. No more changing collets to change bits!...

Unless I'm missing how you are using the jig, isn't it difficult to glue and clamp the diagonal joints??? I've tried something like that but it was a b*tch to clamp without the joints sliding.

Re: Sanding across different materials.

how exactly do you do those joints? The easiest way I know is to cut strips of the woods, in this case maple and bubinga. Glue them together using wood glue, clamp and let dry. Then cut the blank diagonally out of the glued block(shown below by the bold lines). http://www.ozarkmountainbriars.com/im...

Sanding across different materials.

I've worked with woods a lot, never gave much thought about how to sand pieces with two different materials joined together. And never had much of a problem. 8) Working on this tamper was a major PITA! http://www.ozarkmountainbriars.com/images/maplebubingastr1.jpg I normally sand my tampers using st...
