Is this fixable?
I understand the most logical thing would be to get a new block and start over, but I'm having trouble swallowing that if there's a work around. Is there a repair that'll make this pipe functional? I don't care what it'll look like, it's just for me to smoke. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2017050...

How's it work? I tried uploading from my phone and it gave me some sort of error message. I see a lot of "tapatalk" references. What is that? Thank you in advance.

Re: Buffing plateaux?
Also, can I just use run of the mill shellac from Home Depot? Or do I need something specialized?

Buffing plateaux?
Hey guys,
In general, when finishing a freehand, how do you properly finish the plateaux section around the bowl and/or mortise? Should I stain? Do I use the regular buffing process or is there some special way of doing it? Thanks fellas.

Re: Uneven stain
Hmmm. How much sanding should take place after staining? I understand it's probably a matter of preference, but like in general? Is staining then taking all or most of it off and then doing another coat regular?

Uneven stain
Hey guys,
In staining a stummel I got an uneven coverage. Does anyone know why this happens normally? How do I combat this?

Re: Keeping the bowl clean
After buffing and waxing, I wrap 220 grit around a 1/2" dowel rod that's about 4 inches long and sand the chamber. I rounded off the end so it gets the bottom of the chamber. I make sure not to stick my fingers in the chamber after that point unless I'm wearing clean latex gloves so I don't ge...

Re: Keeping the bowl clean
Not sure what you mean by the grain popping out. Did it make a texture while buffing? Some briar is quite soft and could respond t heavy pressure. Also, what wheels are you using on your drill press? Yes, you can now feel the grain texture when you couldn't before. I've got the Tripoli/white diamon...

I'll do that... or not do that rather. Thanks.
As a side bar question, I noticed the grain sort of "popped" out a little as a result of the process... was I too aggressive? It's not a lot, but I didn't make the pipe, so I feel like I screwed up someone else's work.

Re: Keeping the bowl clean
Fair enough. That's a simple solution that I think half crossed my mind, I was only worried that I'd gunk up my new buff.

Keeping the bowl clean
Hello Sirs, I'm new here and extremely grateful to have been included. I've just started making pipes and have so many questions. I'm sure this is an anomaly here so please don't all rush me at once. I rigged a buffing ball up to a drill press to do my 3 step buffing. Hopefully I'll get the 3 wheele...
