Re: my third pipe complete

This is why so many experienced pipe makers have stopped giving critique and advice on this forum and why I seldom do anymore. "What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach." -- Cool Hand Luke I will make one last comment. I asked questions such as "wh...

Re: my third pipe complete

Why did it take all this vituperation coupled with insults for you to describe that? You, sir, appear to have a personality disorder .

Couldn't resist one last parting personal insult, you arrogant boor, could you? I would expect this from a political forum, but a craft man's forum? Sad. I expect you feel much better now.

Re: my third pipe complete

OK Sas, I have to respond to this gratuitous post where you are calling me both an assholes and in denial. You are interpreting my remarks the way you want to. I did not imply that LLC needed to be a better teacher, I was saying that i felt that as long as I was doing pipes that were geometric I did...

Re: my third pipe complete

Wayne teipen and Sasquatch -- Before you accuse me of of denying what you're pointing out, and being enraged at your doing so, "just like everyone else new," kindly review what I've actually said and what ypu've said. I'm denying nothing, I'm trying to understand what what you say you're s...

Re: my third pipe complete

Jeremiah Sandahl--Thanks for you comments. I will use more of the staining to check approach. Unfortunately those pinholes appeared as I was turning to final dimension, so no room to sand more off. Regards to your other comments, efficient critique is acceptable but can be still be.civil. Please re-...

Re: my third pipe complete

To Wayne teipen: thanks for ur further observations I will take them on board. Regarding tool marks, your circled ones on the bowl are some of the dark stain blotches, no nicks or depressions. On the shank, RIght near the ring they are mostl also blotches. there are a couple of pinholes, the reason...

Re: my third pipe complete

I think you need to give this train-stack thing a rest and just make some classic shapes to develop your eye and shop skills. New piano students aren't expected to write music for a long time. They play exercises and music that's already written so that strengths and weaknesses can be measured by t...

Re: my third pipe complete

Doc, I comprehend your visual appearance opinion, but I don't think it approaches freehand ish. In my mind, that would be much more swept and indeed inappropriate. I rather thought it softened the sharp geometry. Is it not true that more acute radii would make it look harder? I really didn't want po...

Re: my third pipe complete

wdteipen -- thanks for the time you took to make your observations, I appreciate it. I have a couple of comments/questions re some of it. The blotchy appearance of some of the stain- that came from the darker stain first applied to bring out the grain, and the darker spots are apparently softer bits...

Re: my third pipe complete

Sas, again thanks for the time spent on that reply. certainly I don't disagree with anything you just wrote. I'm familiar with the golden ratio and french curves. Symmetry and flowing lines are of course the essence of good design in any thing; as in airplanes, it is said, "if it looks right, i...

Re: my third pipe complete

Sas, thanks for that detailed explanation. I apprehend it took some effort. The major problem for guys like me is of what you speak is rather subtle and clear to mostly the cognoscenti. For example , the 2 pipes above, the issues to me are only that the stem line on the first pipe is more refined, a...

Sas, thanks for input. I see where you're coming from, but jeez, I spent a lot of time graduating that out because I like the way it feels. Now I find out I fuck ed up :yield: So all that sanding and it's kids school, oh well. :banghead:

Jeremiah, I'm discussing, not debating. I'm merely trying to ensure that we are all are seeing and discussing the same things. RickB-- thanks for taking the time to outline what you see. In actually fondling the pipe I don't see any waver in the side view, but your line across the bottom of the shnk...

Re: my third pipe complete

You'd be wise to listen to kamkiel. He speaks the truth. Straight lines are difficult. Use a straight edge as your guide. Until you can conquer the straight line, you will have difficulty conquering a good curve. I, at least, know these things because I've been where you are. Disbelieving a critiqu...

Re: my third pipe complete

Kamkiel, thanks for your input and comments. Appreciate your overall positive on the shape. Let me address each of those inputs in turn. The buffing is indeed uniform, those are just highlights from the flash angle. I dont' think there any bulges, per se, in the shank, I believe what your're seeing ...
