Re: PITH 2019!!!

I've made some progress, trying something that for me at least is pretty ambitious. A sort of bent panelled Dublin. Because of the angle I had to orient it in the block to get the one panel as plateaux it needed a shank extension. Do people have opinions about that? It still needs a lot of shaping a...

Re: Need help with chuck

I'm an advocate of the removing two jaws from a four jaw and gripping the block that way personally. But I'm using a hefty old lathe thats firmly bedded down. Even so, I've had no problems with vibration or movement from working this way. I find centering and alignment pretty easy with either a live...

If that's still ok.
Now I just have to figure out what on earth I'm doing...

Re: Hey Bulldog

Thanks Guys, I really feel like this one stretched me. I get your criticism on the top line Doc, as for the bottom line, I can entirely see what you mean Jeremiah, and it's quite possible I'd like it more as a perfect reflection, but I've kinda nailed my flag to the asymmetry flagpole on this one fo...

Re: Hey Bulldog

As promised, here's an update.. (you should be able to click the pictures to go to the hosting site and see it without the stupid watermark.. but it's free hosting.. so what can you do eh?) There is still a bit of a taper to the shank and the stem, but not really as much as would seem to be indicate...

Re: Hey Bulldog

Thanks Jeremiah, DocAitch. Encouraging words. I shall get the stem roughed out and in place before I proceed, I'll let you know how I get on in due course!

Re: Hey Bulldog

Thanks Jeremiah. To some degree the tapering was deliberate on my part, although I feel as though it's too exaggerated certainly, and I also think I need to reduce the weight of it a little as it's quite the lump at the moment. Bringing the edges in towards parallel would help with that. The step is...

Hey Bulldog

Being the rank amateur that I am, I've decided to push myself and offered to make a pipe for an actual, honest-to-god, other person; a friend of mine who introduced me to the world of pipes. I asked him what sort of shape he'd like, he said bulldog. Which is great, as I'd been wanting an excuse. Aft...

Re: Something like a Billiard and a Lovat

The Pippin files do look lovely, but I may not spring for a $60 file just yet, especially with shipping.. I've seen a couple of you-tubers using a dowel to park their pipes on while working on them, I should probably get around to rigging something similar up. I think I'll keep on going at billiard ...

I've not come across chainsaw files before, having never used a chainsaw I guess.. They look very useful, thanks!

Re: Something like a Billiard and a Lovat

Thanks DocAitch, I know the discussion you're talking about, that was a different dude, but yeah, the same criticisms more or less apply. Gauging the sharpness of the transition is tricky, and I think I agree that these are a little on the fuzzy side. That graphic is excellent reference material tho...

Looks great to me, Doug. Wish I could offer any criticism, but I don't feel qualified yet ;)

Something like a Billiard and a Lovat

Those of you that hang out on the facebook page may have seen these already, but I'd love some critical feedback and this seemed like a better venue to request that. These are my first two proper goes at pipe making (not counting some tests in scrap wood I had lying around). The Briar came from oxta...
