Re: Delrin Tenons

It's hard to beat the old metal lathes. Atlas, LaBlond, South Bend, Logan, Clausing...all good bets but may need some work. You're looking at around $900 - $1500 for decent used metal. I have to ask; why a metal lath over a wood lathe? The compound on a metal lathe allows for repeatable precision. ...

Are you wanting to have a block (displaying the plateaux) with a stem that is smokable? Are you going for any particular shape? What kind of tooling are yo...

Re: Do you square up your blocks?

I use mostly Makis plateaux. He's pretty good about cutting them fairly square, but if not, I just throw it on the disk for a few seconds on each side and I'm good to go.

Man that is a gorgeous pipe. Eltang?
I usually turn the shank a little big, then turn the stem flare, then sand the shank to match. I’ve only done a couple with a similar flare, so others with more under their belt might do it differently.

Former makes everything look easy...

I wondered about that bit also. Not sure why (other than convenience and expediency) one would drill from the tool post. I’d definitely check the alignment of my tailstock or the condition of your drill bits/chuck if you’re having troubles.

Welcome to the forum, Donavan! No cult here, just the world’s largest repository of knowledge for the pipe making craft. Questions are always welcome, but I’d recommend reading through the posts and stickies from those who’ve come before you, as most questions pertaining to most techniques have alre...

Re: Chuck and tool help.

I’m stoked for you n80. This is gonna throw gas on your pipe making fire-guaranteed. I’m with you on costs, but for me, if it’s gonna help me make better pipes and I can fit it into my budget, I feel it’s worth it. There’s definitely a learning curve on all of these tools, and I’m still getting the ...

Re: Chuck and tool help.

I think you're making a smart move with the face shield. Shit happens, and you don't want your face in the way when it does. You can just chuck the forstner bit in your Jacob's chuck and go to town. Just make sure you're lined up properly.
