Re: Chuck and tool help.
Never had a catch while turning briar. Then again, I use a metal lathe for most of my rough shaping nowadays, then use a fingernail gouge for details. n80- a good parting tool is a good place to start IMO.

Re: Chuck and tool help.
The VF jaws are the cheapest jaws for pipe making I’ve found. They are aluminum and don’t have angle pins, but fit the Nova G3 and are stout enough for what I’m doing. Way better than using the stock jaws that come with the G3.

Re: Chuck and tool help.
You’ll need to check the threads on your headstock spindle. Your users manual should have this and if you don’t have the manual one can probably be found online. I like the Nova G3 (about $140). My lathe has 1”x8 tpi (threads per inch) on the spindle, so no adapter was needed. I also got the chuck j...

Good advice LL. I’ll keep it the way it is as a reminder what to do better next time.

Re: No. 11- Bent Egg
Thanks George! The stem has already been fixed. However, I'm wondering if I should even bother with the horn. Don't wanna mess up what I have already achieved... Being this is a personal shop pipe, I'll prolly take a crack at it after I finish a current commission. Again, I appreciate the kind words!

Re: No. 11- Bent Egg
I totally see your points. I really like that line thing you do. Is the extension curve best done when turning the piece or done by sanding? Your feedback is invaluable to my growth- thank you!

No. 11- Bent Egg
My 11th pipe. Turned out pretty much like I'd hoped. I might post some better quality ones at a later date, with better angles. Looking at these photos, the junction where the shank meets the bowl looks weird. (I always seem to take photos that are not completely side-on) I'll be getting one of thos...

Re: Given a free wood lathe.
I agree with George. Lathes are powerful and can eff you up if the proper respect/safety protocols aren't observed. There are tons of videos on YouTube regarding lathe operation that will point you in the right/safe direction. That being said, they are a definite game changer with regard to making p...

Re: Italian-esque "Bot" or "Pilliard"... can't decide which
Great work George. The stummel is beautiful... but that stem- Jesus. The symmetry of the taper, the polish and the button. Your buttons are what I strive for. Amazing man. Make another one!
