Re: Partially Rusticated Poker

I’ll offer a few thoughts... I would have rusticated the entire piece, as the partial job makes the pipe look unfinished to my eye. The stain isn’t an issue. Just add more and rebuff, using less pressure on your wheel. Overall shaping isn’t bad, though a little asymmetrical on the right side from th...

Sweet! Can't wait to watch it! Thanks man.

This seems like a good candidate for a video. It's way simpler than it sounds.
Kurt,

I would still LOVE to see this executed in a video!

Re: August goal... 15 stems in 31 days

Hmmm... interesting idea. However, I wouldn’t get hung up on how many you can make in a given amount of days. Instead, I would focus on the different aspects of stem cutting and perfecting them. Your tools will dictate your speed. For instance, are you working with a metal lathe or just a tenon cutt...

Re: A question about metal lathes

Heavier lathe = less vibration. I'd give it a whirl, and if she moves a lot, bolt her down.

Re: Extra - contrasting color of the briar.

I don’t want to come off sounding like a jerk, (so please don’t misunderstand me) but you’ve probably made a few more pipes than me- which means you’re still a beginner. You need to find the tried and true methods and stick with them. Your pipes look good so far. Sometimes you gotta wait for good re...

I understood your post, just not the need to go through such toil. But, if you've got the extra time on your hands- go for it.

Re: Extra - contrasting color of the briar.

I guess if you have enough time on your hands, experiments like this are fun. However, if you talk to most carvers, they will recommend using leather dye. It's tried and true and has never let me down. I let my pipes sit with a primary coat of black (or another color darker than my secondary coat) f...

Re: Pipe #3 – 1st Billiard

I think it’s a hell of a first billiard, especially considering your limitations with regard to tooling. I see the symmetrical issue being that your rim is slightly out of round, with the front edge thicker. The shank looks a little chunky as well. I would’ve straightened the line on the bottom side...

Well said Sas. Micah is a phenomenal carver. I’m super excited to see where he goes in the future. There are a lot of mind blowing, younger talent emerging. Abe Herbaugh and Dustin Franc are 2 that have really caught my eye. Man, I wish I would have started doing this when I was younger... :(

I’ve only bought Makis plateaux and have been pretty happy with the quality. The price is a little lower than Mimmo, but has gone up from $15 to $20 for a large block. Great pics Sas!

I’ve heard he loses much sleep over it
Dunhills like that were factory made, where production needs took precedent over quality sometimes. George is a craftsman and perfectionist. Dunhill couldn’t afford to have an army LLs! :notworthy:
